------题目------
The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
'Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors.'

------正文------
The conclusion that Omega University (OU) should now terminate student evaluation of professors to enable its graduate to secure better jobs seems to be sound and convincing. The arguer points out that since the OU implemented the procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors, overall student grade averages at OU have risen and potential employers believe the grades at OU are inflated which would impede the graduates in getting better jobs. However, a further analysis would reveal that the reasoning in the argument is problematic in several aspects.

In the first place, the arguer unfairly assumes that evaluation procedure is the obstacle for graduates to secure better jobs. In the argument, he claims that "potential employers apparently believe..." without any solid evidence to demonstrate that the employers consider the grades at OU as inflated. Since there is no justification for about it, the assumption is obviously unacceptable.

Secondly, he claims that the fact above would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. But the arguer fails to show us the information about AU. For example, does AU have the same procedure of evaluating teaching effectiveness of professors? If it is that case, the evaluation procedure would not be the cause which could explain the problem in OU. Furthermore, it is highly possible that AU is a famous school while OU is an ordinary one. And the graduates in AU would probably be more popular than students in OU.

Thirdly, the arguer takes for granted that after the new procedure is implemented, professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes. Even if the grade averages of overall student have risen by thirty percent, we could not come to the conclusion that it is the professors who raise the grades. It is possible that the current students in the OU work hard than those before and their grades would probably rise markedly. If the arguer has no solid evidence, it seems to be unfair to doubt the professors or the students' capability of learning.

Last but not least, whether a student could get a good job or not would depend on a host of factors. If OU is a university specialize in agriculture and the positions provided in job market would be so few, the graduates in the OU would have difficulty in getting jobs. Moreover, maybe AU has some instructions of interview for the graduates while OU has not.

To sum up, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. Unless the arguer provides more detailed information about the AU or reliable evidences to demonstrate the cause of the rise of students' grades, we could not accept his/her conclusion.
