When it comes to the issue of whether the greatness of individuals is decided by their contemporaries, different people may have different opinions based on their distinct experience of lives. I concede that some greatness of individuals were not accepted by their contemporaries. However, there are still many great men whose theory or soul would be understood at that time. Besides, with the development of the society, the trend would be more conspicuous.

First of all, many great men in the history, whether in politics or academia, could not be accepted by their contemporary. Sometimes it is because their spirits are actually against the mainstream of the society; sometimes their method or theory were so advanced that no one at that could understand them. For example, the great French mathematician Galois who is famous for his group theory now submitted three papers to the Academy of Science. However, his theory was so complex at that time that no one in the academy could even understand it. After nearly 30 years, with the publication of these manuscripts, Galois's reputation as a mathematician giant became widely recognized. The examples like these are so numerous to be mentioned. Many scientists whose theory was no understood by their contemporaries even suicides with anger in the end.

However, there still exist many superexcellent individuals whose greatness was recognized before their death. One of these fortunate men is Albert Einstein who was well-known as the most talented scientist in 20th century. His theory of relatives plays an important role in modern science. Though his theory in fact went beyond the times, fortunately there were still several scientists who can understand his theory so that it would not be rejected as garbage.

Actually, in my point of view, with the development of society, the thought is freer and freer, experimental facilities are more and more advanced and the communication became more and more convenient and frequent, thus the thought of great man will be acknowledged more and more easy. Admittedly, scientists who were misunderstood nowadays were fewer than it was in the past. The reason, I guess, is that in the past people knew very little of the science and their vision of the world was so limited that they could not understand some new things. For example, people in the past believe that the sun is circle around the earth and the earth is the centre of the universe. However, after the invention of telescope, this problem was solved easily. Thus with the development of technology and scientific tools, people could judge the world with a wider vision.

To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive than any one of them, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that the cognitive level of people is limited at any time, which leads to the misunderstanding of the great individuals. However, with the development of the technology, the thought of great man will be acknowledged more and more easy.
