正文:
Though it is true that we can tell one's attitudes and tastes by his or her appearance and behavior as the speaker claims, I contend that people's appearance and behavior has little bearing on the values and ideas of their society.
There is no doubt that we are able to tell one's interests and attitudes only by his or her appearance, behavior and words. But among these three factors, words is the most unreliable, for people's actions and behaviors may do not in accordance with their words, and what is more, one may even try to misguide others by lectures. Differently, behavior and clothes seldom fail in disclosing one's heartfelt feeling and interests, since most people – excluding those sophisticated people with extraordinary gifts of performing – would naturally do what they want to do and wear what they love to wear. The four fashion girls in the popular soap opera " sex and the city" justify my views. For example, Charlotte, the girl who always wears cute dresses and lovely skirts instead of formal and mature clothes is just as cute as her dresses, while her friend Samanda, a charming woman with a confident smile who always dates rich man, is a mature, self-conceited, and ambitious one. So, in a word, we can tell much about the individual's tastes and views.
Though way of dressing and behavior really can reveal a lot of a person, still, we cannot tell a society’s values and ideas merely by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. At the first place, no individual can completely represent a whole group, let alone the whole society; can president Bush be representative for all American people, including both the rich and the poor (or both the well-educated and poor-educated)? Or can an IBM employee represent all the workers, including white-collars and blue-collars? Both answers are obvious no, and thus, by observing the appearance and behavior of Bush and the employee, we cannot tell the real values and ideas of the society.
Despite of its disability in telling the society’s ideas and values, people’s dresses and behaviors reflect some other aspects of the society, such as the level of productivity. An example on people’s dressing is that in primitive times, when the resources and tools are very poor and limited, people can only wear simple and poor-made clothes which were made of leaves and furs, while, nowadays, people’s dressing is complicated, colorful, and made from various materials. Apparently, different clothes indicate different level of science and technology of a society.
To sum up, though we can find out one’s tastes and views easily by what one wears and acts, it is nearly impossible to tell a society’s values by merely observing people’s appearances and behaviors. And still, we can tell something else, like the society’s economical situation from these observations.
这篇写得非常痛苦:L。。。大家多多帮忙提提意见吧!!!
