The nation of Claria covers a vast physical area. But despite wide geographic differences, many citizens are experiencing rising costs of electricity. A recent study of household electric costs in Claria found that families who cooled their houses with fans alone spent more on electricity than did families using air conditioners alone for cooling. However, those households that reported using both fans and air conditioners spent less on electricity than those households that used either fans or air conditioners alone. Thus, the citizens of Claria should follow the study's recommendation and use both air conditioners and fans in order to save money on electricity.

In this argument, the arguer recommends the citizens of Claria to use both air conditioners and fans for cooling, in order to save money on electricity. To justify this conclusion, the arguer cites the result of a recent study on household electric costs in this area. By comparing the families which use both fans and air conditioners and which use fans or air conditioners alone, the arguers suggests that the former families save the most electricity. This argument suffers from several critical fallacies as follows.

To begin with, the arguer fails to provide any evidence to prove the study which the whole conclusion is based on, is statistically reliable. We have not been presented with any detailed information about the study, which could convince us the conclusion is sensible. For example, how many families were sampled in this survey? Could the sampled families be representative of the overall households group in Claria? How long was the observation continued? Without these detail information, we could not make a judgment of whether the conclusion is reliable or not.

Another problem with study is that it does not present whether the statistic sampled on the cost of electricity of different families are based on the same hours of cooling.  Otherwise, it is entirely possible that the families using both air conditioners and fans only use the cooling equipment for 1 hour each day, and the families using either air conditioners or fans alone use the cooling equipment for 10 hours everyday. In that case, the arguer can not convince us the reason that why the former families save more electricity is the method of cooling they choose.

Furthermore, the arguer commits a fallacy of "overgeneralization". We have been informed in the beginning that the nation of Claria is very large in its physical area and with wide geographic differences. Even if the method of “using air conditioner s and fans" together is the most effective way for cooling, it is may not the best way all the families in the whole country. We can suggest that some areas in the country is in a cold weather condition, even in the summer, they may only need to use the fan for a while each day. The method that arguer recommends may not suits them in that case.

To sum up, this argument lacks credibility for the study result it cites does not lend strong support to its conclusion. To make it logically stronger, the arguer would have to provide more detailed information about the study, and put the geographic difference of the nation of Claria into account.
