208"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

The structure.
1. Admittedly, it could reveal
1. Through things they choose. Look, dress. //especial when in the shop.
2. Though their actions. //the teacher in the classroom
2. However, on the personal level. Could not.
1. because of limitations from outside or environment //people in the workplace like movie stars
2. because of their own factors like economy situations//in fact, a ordinary work man drive a common car: a rich man drives a bluebird.
3. on the national level. Could not reflect.
1. a nation with many minorities like America has immigrants
//plus young people's pursuing for fashioning from France.
2. Other factors like areas in law or politics//read the newspaper the debating on issues like abortion or opposing or not to the war to Iraq.
4. Excessive focus on the appearance and behavior leads to prejudiced perspective.

Although sometimes the way people look, dress, and act could reveal their attitudes and interests, I do not concede that we can tell much about a society's ideas and values simply by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
Admittedly, under some circumstances, people's attitudes and interests are shown through the way they look, dress, and act. While it is the human beings' nature to show their own special characters through what they look and dress, it also provides the chances for us to know their interest. This is especially true in the shops and the salespeople also take advantage of it to help promotions of products, particularly the clothes. It is impossible to imagine that a salesperson persuades a slim girl to buy one piece of large size, unless the girl is shopping for her friends. Attitudes could also be reflected through people's act. As the saying goes, attitude is everything. Although it is to some extent radical, it shows the great influence of people's interests on their act. Consider a teacher in the classroom. The students will be freely answer the question if the teacher would mostly encourage students who have given out their own ideas, while the atmosphere could be stagnant if the teacher is always strict and smiles little to all the students. Therefore, people's look, dress and act could provide us necessary information to judge their interests and attitudes in some cases.
However, we should not totally take conclusion solely relying on people's appearance and behaviors, which may be misleading. On the first hand, people may have to conceal their personal characters because of the limitation of their work environment. It is evident that we could not conclude that famous actor Tom Hanks prefer to wear the military forms simply according his image in one movie where he plays the part of an officer in Air Force. What he likes lies in his everyday life with his friends or family but not in the virtual world--movie. On the other hand, people's economical situation also to some extent decides his/her behavior or appearance, which may be much different from his/her interests. Does the scene that a ordinary worker who is driving a Ford priced at $500 mean that he does not like driving a 法拉利(Bluebird在国外是不是不够档次?) excitedly on the broad highway? All these factors may cover people's real likes.
On the national level, it is even more unwarranted to tell a society's values and ideas only referring to the appearance and behaviors. In this complex society nowadays, there are numerous elements influencing people's attitudes while the countenance and likes are only several pieces of the whole criteria. For instance, when we are in United States, we would be totally confused if we only investigate people's acts or clothes since the United States is well-known as the melting-pot around the world, with increasing amount of immigrants who have various customs. Also, the young people, especially girls, are crazily pursuing on fashioning styles like from France. Instead, it is wise for us to get conclusion from comprehensive aspects, such as the debates about issues on the newspapers or Internet chat room.
Finally, blindly focusing on the appearance and behaviors in order to learn that society's value and ideas may lead to prejudice sometimes. For example, the European settlers unequally made the judgment that black people were low, absurdly according their skin color. Actually, people with black skin also have their own culture and value system, which sometimes white people admire.
In conclusion, although we may see people's interests and attitudes in daily life, the method to learn a society's values and ideas simply from the appearance and behaviors is absurd in my view.
