I broadly agree with the speaker’s opinion that there exist unjust laws with just laws. However, in my view, to disobey and resist unjust laws is the right way we deal with unjust laws.

The law is a set of rules for society, designed to protect basic rights and freedoms, and to treat everyone fairly. So if any law fails to meet the original design, we can consider it is unjust and unfair, but it is still law on which the stability and development of a society depends. And the implement of the laws rely on the adherence of all citizens. In an anarchy society, without compel power of government people tend to disobey the laws which might restrict their freedom. In this case, the laws are just literal existence, and do nothing to govern the behaviors of citizens, which will lead the society into chaotic and orderless situation. Thus, all citizens should obey the laws, in spite of just or unjust ones.

The law as the tool to accommodate the conflicts between different groups, inevitably, is the result of the compromise of different powers. And for people with different social background, to judge a law is just or not result in diverge. Thus, when we choose to disobey or resist the laws we regard as unjust, we might violate the rights of other citizens. For instance, the problem emerges when the patients infected by SARS ask to leave the isolation site. The patients, a specific group whose freedom are restricted and lives are threaten by death, would consider the laws about public health is unjust. But, for the rest, the laws are just and necessary. That is why we should not choose to disobey or resist the unjust laws immediately as the way to fight for our rights.

But what is the way left for us to eliminate the unjust and unfair laws? No one is willing to suffer with the unjust laws, so in every well-designed and well-developed legal system there certainly exist approaches to modify and abolish the unjust laws. Although some of these approaches are not so efficient that would take long period to wait. What we should do is require our demands in peace and practice our rights in legal. We can get ride of the unjust laws by using our rights by voting in election campaign, objecting in legislation, proposing in amendment. Only if all legal approaches fail to accomplish our wishes, we choose to disobey and resist even overturn the unjust laws.

In sum, it is our duty to maintain the stability of the society, and to obey the laws is the best way to fit that purpose, whether the laws are just or unjust in our view. But, it also is our responsible to condemn and modify the unjust laws in legal measures, not just to disobey or resist them.
