Setting Goals

A goal is a purpose you set for yourself. It is what you hope for in the future. You have to identify the skills that you need to get the job you want. Then you need to design a program to help you reach the level of improvement you set for yourself.

To reach your goal, you must have a specific goal. Decide what you are going to do and when you are going to do it. Plan ways to achieve your goal. How will you accomplish it?  Next, identify problems that will get in the way of accomplishing your goal.  Then, think of possible ways to solve the problems.  Finally, evaluate your progress.

Did you reach your goal? Did you get the job you wanted?

One example of interview:

Justin: Good morning.  Greg Wallace?
Greg: Yes, that's me.
Justin: Nice to meet you.  Come in, and thank you for waiting. We're slightly behind schedule.  I apologize.
Greg: That's okay.
Justin: So, let's see.  I'm impressed with your resume and you have a lot of experience.
Greg: Yes, I've worked in the field for 10 years.

Justin: Can you tell me more about your experience?

Greg: Well, let's see.   I worked for Eastline Shipping Company for five years as an assistant to the office manager.  I helped him a lot with shipping and receiving.  When he retired, I applied for the position of office manager and got it.

Justin: I see.  Ah, and what were your main duties as office manager?

Greg: Oh, I supervised the staff, made the office budget, hired new people and looked after accounts payable and receivable.
Justin: What computer system did you use?
Greg: Tryex.
Justin: Have you taken any training courses in the past few years?

Greg: Yes, I always take the latest Tryex course.  It's a system that's always improving and I want to keep current.

Justin: Can you tell me what you see as your strengths?

Greg: Well, I'd say I'm flexible and reliable.  I believe in teamwork, and I try to make the most of the resources around me.

Justin: Did you ever have problems with your staff?

Greg: Yes, sometimes.

Justin: Can you tell me about one such situation?
Greg: Well, I had a problem with an employee who was often late. I asked him if there was a problem and told him that I had noticed he was often arriving late for work.
Justin: What happened?
Greg: He was more punctual after that.

Justin: Okay.  Thank you for your responses. You are aware of the salary range. Do you have any questions for me at this time?

Greg: Yes, I do.  What kind of management team would I be working with?

Justin: We have three support personnel, two junior managers, and a systems analyst on the production team.

Greg: That sounds great.  And when do you want someone to start?

Justin: Next week, Monday.  Is that a problem?
Greg: No, not at all.  Do you have a benefit plan?
Justin: Yes, we do--a very comprehensive plan. Here, it's all outlined in this information package.  Anything else?
Greg: No.  I don't think so.
Justin: Okay.  Thank you for coming.
Greg: No problem. Thank you for your time.
Justin: We will let applicants know about the job on Thursday.
Greg: I'll look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. Good-bye.
