Topic:
The idea of having a single career is becoming an old fashioned one. The new fashion will be to have several careers or ways of earning money and further education will be something that continues throughout life. What do you think?

Sample:
Whether having several careers and continually re-educating oneself throughout life is the new fashion is an interesting question.

There are several reasons which suggest it may be the new fashion. Firstly, in today’s economy, job security is lowering and many companies are dismissing highly trained people who are therefore often forced to seek other careers. Secondly, there is a growing dissatisfaction (particularly in the west) with money and materialism. Many people often do not like their job (perhaps because they initially choose the wrong field of work), and value happiness first, and these people are likely to have many careers in their lives as they seek what they want. Finally, technology is changing quickly. Old jobs are becoming obsolete (making workers redundant) and new opportunities are emerging. The result is many career changes.

However, there are several reasons why having multiple careers may not be the new fashion. Firstly, most people marry and have children, and so they need a steady reliable income because of their family responsibilities (even if they are dissatisfied with their jobs). Secondly, I think people are generally afraid of change, and like the security of doing what they know, wherever possible. Finally, most people are ambitious and want to advance their careers as quickly as possible, and usually the best way to do this is to stay at the same job. If people leave their jobs, they usually have to start again at a much lower rank, and they usually do not like to do this.

In my opinion, I do not think having several careers is the new fashion. Certainly some people change careers because of the reasons I mentioned, but almost everyone marries, everyone likes security (financial, physical and emotional) and everyone has ambition. These qualities are a part of human nature, in every one of us to some degree, and for this reason I believe having multiple careers throughout life will never be popular.

Topic:
Some people like different friends. Others like similar friends. Compare the advantages of these two kinds of friends. Which kind of friend do you prefer？Explain why.

Sample:
Do you have many friends? Are they similar to you or different from you? Which kind of friends do you prefer?
Maybe you are fond of collecting stamps, then what a pleasure it is to have a friend with the same taste, and exchange the little “treasures” with him; or maybe you are interested in playing tennis then how wonderful it is to compete with your friend, also a well-matched tennis fan, in a green field. Having friends whose characters, hobbies and social conditions are similar to you can bring you many advantages. They are easy to get along with, and between you and your friends, there are always something that all of you are familiar with. Because of the similarity, they can see something in the position of yours, and understand you better.
But how about making different friends? Yes, they may have not what you have, but they have what you have not. Perhaps the least similar friends are the protagonist of the scientific novel “Around the World in Eighty Days”, Mr. Fogg, and his ardent, humorous and talkative servant, Jean, who was not a bit like his old-fashioned master. But who can say that Mr. Fogg’s courage and braveness during the great trip and his compassion towards Mrs. Aouda at the end of the story, were not partly from the influence and help of Jean? A different friend is a mirror which can reflect your virtues and shortcomings. From him, you can find what you lack and you can learn what you need. When viewed from these perspectives, different friends may do more in shaping you than do the similar ones.
No matter how similar they are, every two friends have differences, and no matter how different they are, as friends, they have at least one similarity: the sincerity towards friendship. In the sincere friendship, you can find shelter from danger, courage in need, and hands willing to help. Open your heart to your friends, whether they are similar to or different from you, you may become the happiest man in the world.

Topic:
Some people think that family is the most important influence on young adults. Other people think that friends are the most important influence on young adults. Which do you think is the most important influence? Give specific reasons for your answer.

Sample:
The process of growing up is very complex for every person. Among countless factors which influence a person’s growth, there are two-conspicuous aspects: the family and the friends. After one is born, the first and nearest surroundings is the family in which he will grow up. So family does play a significant role in shaping children’s inclination and character. While on the other hand, almost as soon as a child becomes old enough to communicate with other children, he begins having friends, who sometimes influence him more rapidly than do families. Then as far as I am concerned both of their influences are indispensable for children’s growth.

Several centuries ago, there in Europe was a famous to the world. It brought up more than 20 great scientists and mathematicians so that there are so many formula and laws titled with the name: Bernoulli. It is a forceful example to demonstrate the importance of the family. Because the family is children’s most direct source of knowledge and other experiences, those who are brought up in good family tend to possess many pleasant characters, and vise versa.

If we say that families offer the environment of living, friends make another important part in shaping the child. They are connections between the child and the society. By associating with friends, one can gradually get into the society and become sociable. To some extent, man is sociable creature so that children should understand the society, get used to it, and get pleasure out of it. To this point, friends would help. As for me, I have lots of friends who have many different opinions and personalities. Discussing with them enriches my thought, and playing with them builds up my personality. Frankly speaking, I really get a lot of valuable things from my friends.

Families offer us warmth and care. Friends give us strength and horizon. They both help us understand the world as it is. Both of them are the dearest parts in our life.
