Tourism has become the fastest growing and the biggest industry in the world, international cooperation in promoting tourism within the framework of sustainable development so as to meet the needs of present tourists and host countries and regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future, managing resources to fulfill economic, social and aesthetic needs. Ecotourism has been growing rapidly over the last decades. Developing tourism industry has been regarded as one of the most important and rational avenues to preserve wilderness areas.
Obviously, wilderness areas would be considerably preserved through tourism project planning, construction and maintenance. As the nature-based tourism, ecotourism is a subcomponent of the field of sustainable tourism. The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as, "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well being of local people." It implies that the tour operator and the visitors will have some responsibility towards the destination, reducing or avoiding impacts on the areas visited. Ecotourism should contribute to conservation of the natural areas, and contribute local economic profits, as well as generating awareness of conservation among residents and visitors. It is exactly that natural preservation need this awareness, and can not be carried out without such profits. In its broadest sense, ecotourism actively promotes the conservation of the Earth’s unique biodiversity by developing tourism practices that protect land, water and wildlife. From this perspective, the concept of National Parks – of setting aside large natural areas to conserve them for future generations to visit and enjoy – was a major milestone in history. The world’s first National Park, Yellowstone, contains a diversity of mountain ecosystems unmatched in the United States.
Furthermore, many scholars and planners have proposed that the negative consequences of tourism development on places in less industrialized countries can be mitigated by indigenous ownership and management of tourism operations. Yet, while ecotourism has the potential to create positive environmental and social impacts, it can unfortunately be as damaging as mass tourism if not done properly. There is no doubt of the sincerity of the efforts of environmental organizations worldwide to promote a more sustainable approach to tourism, a group of the world tour operators use ecotourism claims as marketing ploys rather than as statements of true philosophical commitments. So local communities even the whole world have an incentive to protect wilderness areas. For the sake of sustainable development, we must pay more attention for a comprehensive indexes group of tourism environmental carrying capacity – ecological carrying capacity, resource carrying capacity, economical carrying capacity, social carrying capacity and psychological carrying capacity. Then we should take effective measures to establish an integrated management mechanism, included official, civilian and professional operations. It is an induction of widely protective perception, and a guideline for tourism construction. Without such mechanism, we have seen enough regretful cases owing to the excessive or irrational exploitation.
The last pristine wilderness areas: national parks, biospheres and other protected areas, coastal areas, mountains, jungles and deserts are all Indigenous homelands. All are being targeted for increased tourism development. I believe, through the harmonious, effective and sustainable ways, wilder areas can be protected practically. |
