From ancient times to the present, almost every society chooses its heroes and heroines who can generally reflect the character of the whole nation. As far as I am concerned, I tend to agree with the speaker to the extent that, it is just one way rather than the best way to understand the character of a society by examining the character of its heroes and heroines.
First of all, what is the character of heroes or heroines? In other words, who would be the hero or heroine? In common sense, the person admired for one’s achievements and noble qualities is considered as a hero or a heroine. The principally heroic merit in that heroes an heroines not only rescue people from jeopardizes, but also be regarded as the spiritual commander who can lead the masses to confront with difficulties and obstacles. Admittedly, as an abstract conception, the meanings of hero or heroine are discrepant according to the individuals’ philosophy and moral psychology. Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Laureate, in fighting for the dignity of the destitute in a foreign land, she gave the world a moral example that bridged divides of culture, class and religion. She is an undoubted heroine, and represents the noble qualities of the society.
On the other hand, how could we define the character of a society? Simply, it is the disposition and manner of human are formed by their situation, and arise from the state of society in which they live. Then, what are the mirrors of the social character? Both spiritual and behavioral, social character has various embodiment for certain, heroic traits should be an typical one.
As an old saying goes, “A hero is known in the time of misfortune.” Heroes and heroines are made and not born. Nearly every society spontaneously chooses its heroes or heroines are corresponding to current circumstance. Furthermore, they change people’s thinking in ways that lead to changes in actions, and thus to changes in the larger system that emerges from those actions. As we know, Helen Keller, worshipped for her courage and fortitude, altered our perception of the disabled even remapped the boundaries of sight and sense.
But it is unnecessary that all character of heroes and heroines ought to be the symbol of a society, whether it is proper or not. To be sure, no one is perfect. For instance, hundreds of firefighters and policemen that perished while trying to save others in the World Trade Center attacks in New York. No one can question their bravery, and certainly no one can deny that each and every one, no matter what their background, is a hero/heroine. One could possibly look into each firefighter, policeman or civilian's background and find problems in the past but there is absolutely no denying them their hero/heroine status on that day.
In sum, the prominent outstanding qualities of heroes and heroines display some aspects of social character. Thus examining the heroes’/heroines’ traits can be an ingenious but incomprehensive method to understand the character of a society.
