雷鬼音乐的起源

　　雷鬼音乐发源于牙买加，其根源来自New Orleans的R&B。 当时牙买加的乐手根据广播中听到的New Orleans快节奏R&B，发展成属于自己的R&B音乐。 这种称为Ska的音乐型态，在当时60年代相当盛行。 然而在一次非常热的夏天， 当地的人无法在高温的户外弹奏如此快节奏的音乐及跳舞。 当地的乐手就将音乐放慢，而形成了 Reggae音乐。 Reggae这个字是源自于「Ragged」， 代表牙买加不修边幅的舞蹈形式。

音乐型态

　　雷鬼音乐结合了传统非洲节奏， 美国的节奏蓝调及原始牙买加民俗音乐， 这种风格包含了弱拍中音节省略， 向上拍击的吉他弹奏， 以及人声合唱。 歌词多以拉斯特法里(牙买加黑人教派) 的宗教传统为主， 强调社会， 政治及人文的关怀。

音乐发展

　　Bob Marley 跟他的乐团 - the Wailers，是Reggae音乐的鼻祖。 随着电影 「The Harder They Come」 (1973) ， Reggae成功的流传到美国， 逐渐影响了白人乐手，在摇滚乐及饶舌音乐中经常可以发现雷鬼音乐的踪迹。 在Bob Marley死后，Reggae 音乐渐渐没落。 直到80, 90年代， 一种融合了饶舌音乐及雷鬼音乐的新型态出现， 这种叫做dub 或是toasting 的新音乐型态为雷鬼音乐注入了新的生命。 Bob 的儿子 - Ziggy Marley，也是这段时间雷鬼乐界的代表人物。

雷鬼音乐对世界音乐的影响

　　虽然只有少数的牙买加乐手的音乐流行于世界， 但在过去的20年间， Reggae对其他各种音乐都有深远的影响。 主流摇滚乐手Eric Clapton及Stones到Clash 及Fugees， 都将Reggae融入他们的音乐中，这其中影响最大的要算是在舞曲方面。 牙买加特有的舞厅文化 - 百万瓦特的音响系统, ， 独一无二的 “one-off” 录音， 强调drum及bass， 以及饶舌的人声覆盖在旋律音轨上的运用，影响了全球的Dance文化， 其它像Dub Remix 也被流行音乐广泛的模仿。
