The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
'Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors.'

In the argument, the author suggested that Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors in order to enable its graduates to secure better jobs. To support his claim, the writer cites that because of the evaluation the professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes so that the potential employers thought the grades at Omega are inflated. The reasons the writer gave are relatively sound, however, close scrutiny of the evidence reveals that it accomplishes little toward supporting the author's claim, as discussed below.
Firstly, the author cites that the professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes because the university encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. However, perhaps there are other factors which may affect the grades of the students, such as the quality of the instruction was improved or the students work harder than before. Unless the omen proves that the evaluation is the only factor which made the students’ grades higher than before, the action of cancel the evaluation is meaningless.
To further support his or her claim, the author cite that the potential employers believe the grades at Omega are inflated, which would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. But the author didn't give us sufficient evidence that these two things have any causal relationship. Maybe the Alpha University graduates have always been more successful than the graduates from Omega University and it's not the result of the potential employers' thought about the grades at Omega.
The final problem involves the voluntary nature of the evaluation procedure. The omen provides no data of the exact number of percentage of students who participant in the procedure. Perhaps there only little part of the students has taken part in this evaluation procedure so that it totally has no effect on the students’ grades. And so the action of cancel the evaluation will be useless.
In sum, the writer's evidence is so poor that I can hardly accept his recommendation. If he want to persuade us that the Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors, the writer should give more sufficient evidence to prove that the evaluation really leads the professors give higher grades to the students not for some other factors. Besides that to better assess the argument I would need the evidence to prove that the students of Omega were not successful at looking for work just because their higher grades which were thought to be inflated.
