Argument 47 字数541 words
Scientists studying historical weather patterns have discovered that in the mid-sixth century, Earth suddenly became significantly cooler. Although few historical records survive from that time, some accounts found both in Asia and Europe mention a dimming of the sun and extremely cold temperatures. Either a huge volcanic eruption or a large meteorite colliding with Earth could have created a large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere that would have been capable of blocking enough sunlight to lower global temperatures significantly. A large meteorite collision, however, would probably create a sudden bright flash of light, and no extant historical records of the time mention such a flash. Some surviving Asian historical records of the time, however, mention a loud boom that would be consistent with a volcanic eruption. Therefore, the cooling was probably caused by a volcanic eruption.
The arguer's point of view that the cooling in the mid-sixth century was possible caused by a volcanic eruption seems to be acceptable at first glance. After all, it bases on the historical records of that period which indicates that there is a loud boom in Asian, and no records about the sudden bright flash of light, which may caused by a large meteorite collision. However, the hasty conclusion about the reason why the earth changed extremely cold is unconvinced. The arguer neglects other possibilities, which may had the same effect on the earth. Besides, it is doubtful that whether the records were believable or not.
To begin with, the arguer indicates that some historical records found both in Asia and Europe, mentioned the extremely cold temperatures in the mid-sixth century. It is problematic that whether the whole world changed extraordinary cold at that time. It is equally possible that the temperatures sharply decreased only in Asian and Europe, other geography regions may remain normal temperatures. Besides, those historical records cannot reveal the exact number of temperatures because the first thermometer was invented by Galileo in the sixteenth century. The recorders only finished their work by the feeling of themselves. It is highly possible that they were so sensitive about the decreasing temperatures that they overstated the real centigrade number. In a word, the historical records found in Asia and Europe cannot be compelling evidence to show that the earth changed very cold at that time.
In addition, even we admit that the earth really had extremely cold temperatures at mid-sixth century, we cannot sure that it was not caused by a large meteorite collision. The arguer only shows that no records about the sudden flash of light were found, but it does not mention that no large meteorite collision happened at that time. It is highly possible that the meteorite collision occurred in the geography region, which no residents lived there at that time, like in Arctic. Nobody knew the happening of meteorite collision, the records of the collision was impossible to be recorded. Besides, the records may lost by some unknown reasons. So, the reference that no records about the large meteorite collision were found cannot persuade us to agree with the arguer.
Last but not least, the arguer notes that some surviving Asian historical records of that time mentioned a loud boom at mid-sixth century. But there is no evidence to show that it was caused by a volcanic eruption, perhaps it was just from an earthquake. Besides, there is no relationship between the volcanic eruption and the extremely cold temperatures. It is highly possible that before the eruption of the volcanic, the temperatures of the earth had already sharply down. We cannot consider that the eruption of volcano changed the temperatures of the earth.
To sump up, the arguer fails to prove that the extremely cold temperatures of the earth are caused by a volcanic eruption, not a large meteorite collision in the mid-sixth century. Moreover, he ignores that other possible factors had the same effect on decreasing the temperatures of the earth, such as the effluence of the sun. We cannot sure the exact reason of the highly cold temperatures of the earth at that time.
