In most professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge


There is a story in ancient China" the loft in the air" , which tells us that a landlord wanted his masons to build the very third floor of a building without the first two layers. It is true the land lord is quite imaginative; however, under most circumstances during that time, his will would not come true. Careful reflection shows us that although imagination plays a pivotal role in most professions and academic fields, we must not neglect it is the knowledge that is the basis of everything.

From the common sense and empirical experience, imagination , when it comes to the fields of art and any other field related to creation , offers more chances to approach success . Turning to the nature of art, we can see that it is the intangible abstraction of blurred fragments of reality the artists gather from the tangible world , which is just imagination, that forms the core of  art and makes it possible for art to transcend experiences, reality, and even the varieties art may manifest. In the process of art creation, materials are gleaned , rearranged and abstracted to be a complicated language used by the artists to generate the final products which are at an aesthetic altitude much higher than that of the primitive resources. Of course during this time , it is imagination that functions  in the entire aesthetic sublimation process. To find examples one need look no further than the success of fantasy film "The Lord of The Rings", one of the most renowned films in the year 2004. This outstanding film, which won all 11 Oscar awards that it was nominated, is understandable to most people as a tale about an imaginative alliance of good souls battling against a frightful evil, and may be further interpreted as struggle of humans with industrialization and war. The success of "The Lord of The Rings" is no doubt attributed to the imagination of the artist. In this sense , if we don not put imagination to a higher position, we are just cutting off the wings of art and those non-scientific subjects which require more imagination than the basic knowledge.

However, imagination with no experience is water without source or tree without roots because experience provided raw materials needed to actualize imagination. we all know that Newton developed the Law of gravity at the start of the scene of an apple falling down from the tree. But in this course the imagination did not help since if he had not learned the theories of Euclid and Descartes, there may be nothing about his classic physics.  Knowledge is the basis of imagination, without which , imagination will degenerate to unrealistic fantasy. Even worse, imagination can not always follow people's will and always act like an uncontrolled horse running in the plain and giving rise to a lot of problems. It is known that creation which based on the knowledge may bring big progress and result in even a revolutionary transition of a society. Seeing unimaginable profits and the magic power, who can say imagination without knowledge can survive in this world full of fierce competition.

Successful scientists usually create new theory or invent a new thing by learning former experience and thinking in his or her own unique way. The combination of imagination and knowledge will certainly make a great creation, which benefit the world as a whole. For instance, when many scientist hold the belief that no one can fly in the sky, the Wright brothers full of imagination finally succeed using their knowledge. Also, Just as Robert Owens’s utopia, In which all people are born equally, and no wars and no hunger exist, thus no information need to be hided, though it is beautiful imagination for a ideal world but apart from the reality, it encourage people to fight for the dream and it is not impossible. With the hope of this nice world , people walk forward until now.

To sum up, it is reasonable to say that knowledge and imagination is not doomed to contradict with each other. Experience with no imagination is like a bird that has no wings because imagination helps to lift experience to a higher plateau. Imagination without knowledge is like the landlord's loft in the air which end in nothing but failure. However, the marriage of the two is always showering people with creational ideas.
