TOPIC: ISSUE 212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 548          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-3-13

The speaker claims that any means carried on to attain a goal is justifiable when the goal is worthy. In my view point, although the claim is not without merit, especial when it comes to achieving an American dream from a nobody to a celebrity, it overlooks some constraints as the preconditions for this claim, particularly with respect to societal law and moral standard.

To begin with, to discuss this issue a definite about what kinds of goal is worthy should be made out clearly at first. A worthy goal would be very different from person to person, but a widely accepted view toward this goal is that a worthy goal should meet the development of society or lots of people's need. For example, Columbus, the famous Italian explorer in the service of Spain, considered that the earth is round, over three months to sail from Europe to America. Then, his goal is achieved by his endeavor and a truth was testified to all the people. Another example is Martin Luther King, a famous social activist in US, was still remembered by most of us in the voice that is "I have a dream" and struggled for the equal rights for black people in US. Thus we can get a conclusion that a worthy goal should meet the requirement of the contemporary society or pursuit for the truth.

Secondly, a paramount factor in the process of pursuing a goal is to be allowed by the law, which is one of the constraints as I mentioned. In politic realm, some people in order to acquire a certain position often make many tricks, which is illegal. For example, the Nixon's Watergate Affair was ended up by Nixon's resignation. And the opponent of Clinton spent much of the government's money to reveal the president's affair. In sports realm, Louis, the former famous runner on the playground, was denounced as drinking some certain forbidden substances. All this evidence gives us an alert that a worthy goal should obey the law of our society.

Thirdly, another constraint should come into our minds is to suit the moral requirement in a certain society. Many events emerging from time to time illustrate that moral standard is still the most hot spot in many societies and some people disdain this point is not welcomed. One notable example is the death of Diana, the graceful lady in British. Several journalists tracked the former princess for speculating more private detail life of the princess. At last, Diana was killed in the accident for escaping from tracked. Many people would not forgive these journalists activities and this kind of action can not conform to the moral requirement.

Admittedly, we should alert to some people tend to plead a worthy goal in excuse of their personal contemptible means and private interests. During the World War II, Adolf Hitler, who was admired by most of the Germen at that time period, made many ambitious orders for expending the land of German and expelled or massacred the Jews. This brutal action is unbelievable.

In conclusion, when a goal is worthy--that is, the goal conforms to the two necessarily constraints discussed above, any means taken to attain it is justifiable. Only pay attention to the law and moral standard in a society can a worthy goal be achieved in a justifiable way.

例子很好,也很充分,有一个不足就是,例子是不会说话的。在例子后面最好用一句话说明一下。 加油!
