你改成“that the------the。”，我觉得有道理，读起来也顺。
但是，我把D改成：world is combined. 觉得也可以。

40.engaged research------he was engaged in the research。while是连词，后面接整个句子。而且engage是“使从事于”的意思。因此要用sb be engaged in sth.这种形式（在此感谢王冰同志对本题提出修改意见。）

还可以进一步改成engagged in the research，因为while后面“主+系”可以省略。对否？

请指教！

40题，可以同时省略主谓的。

23题，
改C是：the amount in the US exceeded the rest of the world (that is)combined.
改D是：the amount in the US exceeded that the rest fo the world is combined.
这么一说有道理。
改C是说美国出口汽车数量超过了联合算起来的世界剩余部分。
改D是说美国出口汽车数量超过了一个东西，那就是世界剩余部分联合起来。

YOU ARE A GRAMMAR GENIUS~~

抱歉我没有注意这个bug。我先把它改过来，如果有人表示异议再讨论。

确实是C。应该改成
23. (Until) 1985 the amount output (of automobiles) in the US exceeded (that of the) rest of the (world combined).

... exceeded (that the) rest of the (world is combined).语法上应该不是很通。这里考点可能是比较的用法，that of ...
