When faced with the dilemma of whether attending class should be required or optional, some may claim that optional classes grant students freedom enough to develop. This seems reasonable at the first glance; however, it does not bear closer analysis when we find required classes possess several merits that can never be surpassed.

To begin with, required classes ensure those who are less-disciplined spend enough time on their academic study. Not all the pupils know exactly what their goals are, why they attend university. Therefore, it is the university that should take the responsibility and set up severe regulations for students to follow. Only when classes are compulsory can students spend less time idling around and more focusing on study.

In addition, teachers play an important role in class passing knowledge that no self-learning can replace. As is known to all, tourists need the help from guides; likewise, students require the aids of teachers. A good teacher specializes in organizing classes, choosing appropriate materials, analyzing cases and assigning homework, all of which are critical in assisting students to grasp knowledge. If students study by themselves, they lose the opportunity to participate in these activities and interacting with others, which as a result, may not bring the best outcome.

Admittedly, optional classes have their own blessings. Schedules can be set according to individual differences. Pupils can thus utilize their time in most efficient way. Besides, they can choose the field in which they are most interested, hence stimulates their passion in studying. Nevertheless, only on condition that the students are disciplined enough can we expect them to organize their study so well.

Taking into account all the blessings and curses, I strongly advocate that attending classes should be required for university students, because it prevents aimless ones form wasting time and helps them maximize the knowledge they can get in the universities.

pupil是我读这个文章的最大疑点 难到不是专指小学生吗 student不是更通俗点么?
no selfstudy can replace no-->not?
require the aids  感觉help 就好拉 aid有点紧急帮助的那种感觉 first aid center?之类的..推敲多了 ?

pupil是在经贸英语的课本里看到这样的用法的，是教企业家的班，把那帮学生成为pupil，所以窃以为可以这么用的
