同意B，后者比前者的程度重，而且两者都暗示有干净的意思。austere是缺乏装饰；sterile是没有细菌。

刚翻了一下MW，发现barren的意思是不育（not reproducing: as  a : incapable of producing offspring   used especially of females or matings  b : not yet or not recently pregnant  c : habitually failing to fruit）、无生产力，贫瘠（ not productive: as  a : producing little or no vegetation : DESOLATE *barren deserts*  b : producing inferior crops *barren soil*  c : unproductive of results or gain : FRUITLESS *a barren scheme*）；
缺乏（ DEVOID, LACKING   used with of *barren of excitement*）；无趣、迟钝等等；与arid（干旱）并无联系，而ARID（ lacking in interest and life : JEJUNE）又无明显程度上的递进。

个人还是倾向选D， 因为sterile虽然是无菌，但并没有extremly clean的含义啊。事实上无菌和干净还是两个概念，觉得还是词义上的直接对应好一些。
