212. "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
The speaker asserts that if a goal is worthy, then any means of attaining that goal is justifiable. In my view this extreme position misses the point absolutely. Whether certain means are justifiable in reaching a goal must be determined on a case by case basis, by weighing the benefits of attaining the goals, at the same time, bad effects along with it. This applies to equally to individual goals and to social goals.
Consider the goal of science research, seeking for more and more research fruits, with large devotion of both money and people, are undoubtedly right and worthy. New inventions or productions which proved to advance the human development will succeed by countless failures. Take Thomas Edison, the great inventor, for example, during the process of his research, Edison experienced pile of attacks, but he insisted on the research through various means to reach the worthy goal in his mind, at the end, the electric light was invented which changed people’s life. However, the research such as clone needs further consideration. If the scientists who engaged in clone do some experiments by various means on human cloning regardless of the basis standard of ethics, the research result will suffer and threat the peaceful life of human beings. People who reach their goals by plagiarism of others’ also ought not to be accepted, although the results are benefit to our society.
Consider the competition in business, every business company’s goal, in the end, is the gain profit through all the efforts they can take, including right strategies, strict management, good marketing. The progresses of getting maximal profit are undoubtedly right and efficient. But all the activities they act should be accord with the relevant laws and ethics. If pollutions to the environment come up during their efforts to gain their business goals, no matter how much profit they get, the result is meaningless, for it is at the cost of environment and our future for existence. It’s also unworthy in this condition.
At the end, we can have a look at the realm of politics. Though fair competitions which will prompt the development are necessary and inevitable, the actions such as infringing the dominion of countries and human rights are not allowed and needed to be looked down upon.
In sum, the speaker asserts the question. The worthiness of any goal ,no matter politics and business, can be determined by weighing the benefits of achieving the goal against the its costs-to us as well as others.
