"At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

Should the endangered species be saved by human beings, in name of responsibilities or expiation of the evil consequences accompanied with the development of human society? And should extraordinary efforts be made to avoid extinction, at a great cost in money and jobs? From personal perspective, I fundamentally believe that human should make efforts to save endangered species, while balancing the protection of environment and settlement of social problems.
Admittedly, we cannot deny the fact that extinction, in large part, is due to the natural processes, rather than human behaviors. According to the Darwinian argument that extinction results from the inexorable process of so-called "natural selection" , at various times in the geological past, the natural selection play a key role in the development of species, inevitably resulting in the extinction of some species lacking the ability to adapting the rapid changes of the surroundings. The extinction of dinosaurs can be attribute to the comet’s collision with earth. Another example is that trilobites disappearance globally is due to their lacking ability to adaptation.

Though natural processes does eliminate some species through natural selection, human also play a part in accelerating some processes of extinction in modern society. Human deteriorate the environment where species inhabits. For example, to satisfy the demands of woods for industry and domestic use, human beings destroy forests where a myriad of species inhabits, without considering that deforestation would bring about natural disasters. Without adequate areas of forests, a lot of wildlife would lose their homes where they could survive. Also, the exhaust and waste used in human activities were discharged into the atmosphere in the absence of any effective purifying methods.

In addition, natural dominant role in extinction does not mean that human do not need to assume the responsibility of protecting the environment. On the one hand, in the interests of human themselves, in respect that they belong to the nature, also act as a role in the food chain and circulation of energy. The intricate matrix of interdependent relationship may also be destroyed by the absence of protection. On the other hand, species blossom could also boom the human development. What is more, the moral duty should also be awoken in our mind, calling for rescue the endangered species. We should be aware of the belief that we are obligated to help prevent extinction. Thus, humanities should make efforts to save endangered species, in virtue of responsibilities of human beings, as well as expiation of humanities’ some blind behaviors.
Nevertheless, not only should we endeavor to promote the artificial protection, but also we should attach importance to current social problems. Such as the increasing rate of unemployment, leading to a large portion of subsidies. As for education, which bear close relation to the future of our world, equally requires investment regarding new schools available for more children, enough fund for scientific research and improvement in conditions of labs and classrooms. Therefore, we should balance the investment between urgent social problems and the rescue for some rare species.
In sum, as for the factors of extinction of species in history, there are no easy or definite answers, still we should make great efforts to ensure the survival of species, in view of the moral duty or the prosperity of ourselves. At the same time, human beings should balance the urgent social problems and the salvation of endangered species, steering the money and time toward the maximum use. |
