------题目------
If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable.
------正文------
The statement asserts that if a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable, which is too extreme to be accepted by individuals and society. Any goals, no matter individual, national, or social ones, can only be pursued through means which will not induce great costs or harms that cannot be overcomed by corresponding profits.
Consider sending children to university, an individual goal which is undoubtedly worthy. Attending university provides students with specialized knowledge, comprehensive experiences, colorful school life, and following perfect jobs. Unfortunately, limited by current economic status, attending university cannot be afforded by all families in China. Parents loan money from banks, relatives, and neighbors, since they believe that the reward of attending higher education will outweigh their investment. However, such pity events appear in newspapers and television that some parents go beyond normal schemes to gather money. Some turn to theft, robbery, and cheating, while some others even conduct suicide so as to receive public attention. Even if their children are enabled to attend university with money coming though such schemes, they will lose their affable and respectable parents for ever. Though gaining specialized knowledge and perfect jobs is worthy, it is unjustifiable to attain such a goal at the cost of losing happy life.
Besides, consider developing satellites, a national goal which is obviously worthy. Satellites contribute too many aspects of a country, such as international communication, geological study, and meteorological research. Take meteorological satellites for example, they help people understand the evolvement of whether and climate, predict disasters like floods and droughts, and avoid consequent problems. However, the country cannot dedicate the whole economic powers into the area of making satellites, without considering the fundamental domains such as agriculture and industry, the living conditions of residents, and the stability of society. Without smooth improvement of agriculture and industry, people are not able to develop areas which will use the data coming from satellites. Though making satellites is worthy, it is unjustifiable to achieve such a goal at the cost of the destruction of national economy.
Further more, consider solving economic problems, a social goal which is always worthy. When economic problems, such as profit declination, market depression, and unemployment are solved, people can achieve richer life. However, it will never be justifiable to achieve such a goal by using means which disobey laws and morality. Even if the profit declination is solved by steeling national funds, the market depression is overcomed by robbing others' resources, and the unemployment is reduced by conducting wars, the improvement of economy will not last long as the productivity remains undeveloped. More severe problems will appear when such activities are punished by laws and morality.
In conclusion, though many individual, national and social goals are apparently worthy, it is not justifiable to attain such goals without appropriate means. Means to achieve goals cannot go beyond the affordability of contemporary situations and the restrictions of laws and morality, otherwise the costs and harms caused by using such schemes can never be overcomed by the original goals. |
