ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

Scandals, a controversial topic, often attract us so much. We can see them on newspapers, TV and Internet. Is scandal a useful way in politics, academia or other areas? It is true that scandals have some merit. However, they also embrace many negative effects. From Nixon's Watergate event to Clinton's sex scandal, every event has both the positive effect and the negative effect. At the same time, we should not ignore the crucial function of speakers and reformers.
    To begin with, scandals are indeed useful, especially in the field of politics. As we know, when a scandal is reported, people will soon pay attention to it. There will be thousands of report that describe the whole process and express different opinions. To some extent, scandals provide us opportunities to find out the defects of society. In the field of business, we can see some managers and executives who have ever regarded as heroes are arrested for the use of money illegally. Through these scandals, we can assess the system of economics whether efficient and safe. From this point of view, scandals can provide us a relative good function, help us to modify the flaws and restructure a more secure system.
    However, scandals also have many negative effects that we cannot neglect. Some scandals are so violent that we have to pay a lot from their hurt. Many people like watching NBA or other sports matches. Nevertheless, these matches are not always like what we expect. The major part of a match should be the competition of scores and skills. However, some players prefer to use their energy to attack their competitor rather than pay more attention to the match itself. It is inverse to the purpose of athletics, and also lead to serious consequences. In the academic realm, scandals always represent dishonesty or fabrication. Some scientists counterfeit experimental date in order to achieve their personal objective. When scandals are disclosed, these so called “scientists” will receive punitive punishment and their reputation will be diminished.
    At the same time, we cannot neglect that speakers and reformers play a significant role in our society. The scandal can provide nothing more than phenomenon. Without these speakers and reformers, these scandals will occur time and time again. Only if the speakers debate these scandals and reformers find the proper solutions, can we impede the same events from happening again. Moreover, the reformers' effect sometimes can give scandals a fatal beat. They can analyze the rooted reasons; find the best way to stop scandals.
   In the final analysis, we should look at these scandals in an objective way. While provide us some useful cases, scandals can also influence our society in a negative way. At the same time, speakers and reformers do their best to serve our society, it is because them that our society becomes better and better.
