TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

The evaluation of the greatness of individuals' is discussed from generation to generation. Who can decide their contribution to the society remains a question, but I think, most of the great figures are appreciated justly after they died for many years.
(Of course)Undoubtedly, the great individuals contribute a lot to society and speed up the development of the human world. Most of their inventions were applied in life and produced numerous profits, most of their theories solved the society's problem or the scientific puzzles, as a result, many giants were respected during their period and their achievement was recognized. For example, Newton, one of the most famous physicists in the world, discovered the three basic principles of mechanics. He was admired for his achievement and hold the most important status in academic field at that time.
However, not all the giants are the same fortunate as Newton. Actually, the majority of them lead a poor life in their period and there are many reasons responsible for this.
Firstly, before our modern, democratic society now, the government was not so (open-minded) enlightened (that) and the leaders might (eliminate) persecute the people holding the different ideas with them in order to protect (their) the (policy) regime. For example, Copernicus, the great astronomer who believed that earth is not the center of the universe but the sun. At that time, country was controlled by the Catholicism and the king exaggerated the theory which assumed that earth was the center of the universe. Copernicus ' theory shook the foundation of the government. The leader was afraid of been laughed and even tried to arrest him. As a result, the correct theory had no place to stand and Copernicus was recognized as a great scientist hundreds of years after his death.
The second reason I think that those genius can be decided only by those who live after them is that they are so clever, provident and innovative that their excellent (thought) ideology could not be comprehended by civilians contemporary. Take painting for instance, the audience need to have (enough (specified) a lot professional knowledge and accurate (thought) insight which is similar to the author. Therefore, the best artists' painting styles were usually too avard-garde to be accepted by the common people or even other ordinary artists so they were not recognized and even did not have the money to support themselves. These artists were forgotten by that period but decades later, their paintings were invaluable.
All in all, although some of the great individuals won the respect and the status they deserved at their period, most of them can only be decided by those who live after them because of the depraved government or their unacknowledged theory. Thus, we need to provide a more open environment for them and pay more attention to the people with talent in order to give the genius a better space to develop.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT160 - As people grow older, an enzyme known as PEP increasingly breaks down the neuropeptide chemicals involved in learning and memory. But now, researchers have found compounds that prevent PEP from breaking neuropeptides apart. In tests, these compounds almost completely restored lost memory in rats. The use of these compounds should be extended to students who have poor memory and difficulty in concentrating-and therefore serious problems in school performance. Science finally has a solution for problems neither parents nor teachers could solve.

In the augument, the author is merely based on the unsubstantiated evidence and a dubious research and arrives at the conclusion that the compounds can solve the problem of poor memory and bad performance in school and suggests to extend the compounds to all students. However, after close scrutiny, the evidence he presents lend little support to his argument and there are some critical flaws in the passage,too.
The threshold flaw of his analysis is that the author fails to establish the relationship between the compounds that prevent PEP from breaking neuropeptides apart with the solving of the problem of poor memory. At the beginning of the passage, PEP is just illustrated to be the enzyme which breaks down the chenmicals involved in learning and memory, we can't say that it cause the problem of poor memory. Maybe it has to effect with other chemicals to impede the memory function.
Secondly, even if PEP really cause the problem of poor memory, the compounds found by scientists only restored lost memory in rats. Would it be helpful to improve the memory function of rats? Even it is so, the compounds has just been experimented on rats, if we want to extend it to human, we need first to make experiments on monkeys, then begin the clinic experiment, this means we have to wait for several years to make it applied. And what's more, several years later, whether the compounds would be useful is still a question,so it is not practical to extend it to stdents right now.
Thirdly, when talking about PEP at the beginning, it says that when people grow older, PEP will increasing breaking the chemicals concerning memory and learning. So what will it do with children or youngsters? And even if the compounds found by scientists could solvet the peoblem of memory, the research does not mention it's effect with the learning problem, so the author's conclusion that it can improve the performance of students at school is groundless.
To sum up, the author's argument lacks support and it is not convincing as it stands. To better bolter the conclusion, we need to make clear that whether the compounds found can solve the problem of memory and whether it will also take effect in human. |
