Statement of Purpose
When I was a child, I was curious about the view beyond the mountain near my
home. When I asked my father one day for the view there, he refused to answer
me directly but took me into a hiking in that mountain. As soon as we arrive
d at the peak, the view beyond turned out naturally. At that time, I was real
ly delighted.
In high school, I was so curious about the chromatic reagents and marvelous r
eactions in chemistry courses that I was wondering why all these could happen
. Guided by this intensive interest, I began to study chemistry actively and
learned a lot through high-school chemistry course. However, I found that I w
as still unable to explain some chemical phenomena even at the end of my high
school. At that moment, I suddenly remembered the view beyond the mountain I
enjoyed at its peak when I was a child. The inquiry to explain chemical phen
omena was just like the hiking in that mountain. In that case, I needed to ke
ep on hiking to the peak of chemistry to fulfill my inquiry. Therefore, in th
e year 2002, I applied for and later got admitted by College of Chemistry and
Molecular Engineering, xxx University, the nationwide top-ranking institu
tion in chemistry.
The desire to explain chemical phenomena keeps on dominating my undergraduate
life. Thanks to the excellent undergraduate program here, I have received sy
stematic and rigorous trainings in both theoretical and experimental chemistr
y. Allthese years, I stick to compare and contrast the new information with w
hat I have originally known. Thus, I am able to grasp their intrinsic princip
les and assimilate them as part of my own knowledge framework. Due to my hard
academic work, I have received an accumulative overall GPA of XXX/4 (XXX/100
). Meanwhile,I gradually find out that the most attractive topic of chemistry
research is Surface.
My interest in Surface Science began as early as my freshman year when I was
taking General Chemistry taught by Dr. Bian Jiang. During a lecture, he showe
d us a picture of the structure of Si (111)-(7×7) by STM. Totally amazed at
the ordered architecture of these atoms, I was so eager to know more about bo
th the surface properties and the analytical techniques to detect them. Conse
quently, while studying following courses, such as Physical Chemistry, Struct
ural Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis, I was always thinking about applyin
g the fundamental principles and basic methods in these courses to the atom-l
eveled surface. Moreover, I frequently attended seminars and audited some adv
anced graduate courses on Surface Science, such as Surface Structure and Anal
ysis and Physical Chemistry on Surface. Therefore, Surface Science is in fact
the academic focus throughout my undergraduate study.
(Research Experience ommitted)
Surface Science is challenging for there exists a large number of ordinary bu
t puzzling issues. With the ever-increasing progress of surface characterizat
ion techniques and research conditions, the study on surface has been develop
ing dramatically and is actually playing as a direction for people to explore
the situations in three dimensions. As a person who desires to devote himsel
f in this field, I am looking forward to get involved in projects concerning
controlled growth, assembly, structure and properties on surface. I also drea
m of manipulating atoms or molecules directly so as to fabricate advanced sur
face materials with ordered functional blocks.
(Use spefici paragraph for specific Univ.)With my life-long goal set to be a researcher on Surface Science, I have madeup my mind to obtain a Ph.D. from USA. With the famous faculty and state-of-the-art equipments, University of Pittsburgh singles itself out as a leading one in surface study. Among the outstanding faculty in the Department of chemistry, I am quite interested in Prof. John T. Yates, Jr. He has a long experience working on surface with various analytical techniques. His previous project on short- chain alkanethiols on Au (111) impressed me most, for it elucidates that the dissociation of the S-H bond is indeed induced by defect sites.More importantly, he is explaining this phenomenon through various techniques, especially TPD, as well as theoretical simulation, all of which I have been longing for. His recent work on coronene is also interesting and has quite a space for exploring.Prof. David Waldeck’s research interest in electron tunneling through organic films is also attractive and challenging. Besides, I am interested in Prof. Shigeru Amemiya and Prof. Alexander Star. If I have the opportunities to work under their directions, I will enrich my knowledge, enhance my expertise and sharpen my research skills in the surface field.
The hiking in my childhood satisfied me with the view beyond the mountain. In
an analogy, all I have experienced since high school is just like another hiking to such a peak in the academic world. I dream that I will one day arrive
there so that I can enjoy the beauty of chemistry. |
