Issue144: “It is the artist, not the critic, *who gives society something of lasting value.”
*A person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

When talking about great artists, people all agree that Da Vinci, Mozart, Shakespeare are household names, but how many of us can name some famous critics in history? Only few people who have specialized knowledge knows those critics. Thus, many people tend to believe that it is the artist, not the critic, who provides the society with lasting value of art. Actually, critics also contribute a lot to the world of art, which should never be ignored.

To begin with, there is no denying that without artists, we would not have the chance to appreciate the fabulous works of art existing in history and in the contemporary time. Because of Shakespeare, we are immersed in the love story of Romeo and Juliet; thanks to Beethoven, we can travel in the incredible musical world created in his symphonies; but for Da Vinci, we would not be able to discuss the beauty of Mona Lisa. It is the artist who makes our life colorful. With various kinds of novels, music, films, painting, etc, our life is full of creativity and amazement. In this sense, we can say that artist gives society something of lasting value.

However, when we give those artists credit, we should not ignore the contribution of critics at the same time, without which the lasting value of art would be hard to discover and understand. First, critics, who have specialized knowledge about a certain kind of art, can offer professional and insightful evaluation of artistic works. With critics’ interpretation, people can have a more comprehensive understanding of those works. Besides, critics can help people select excellent works of art. Judging from critics’ evaluation, people can decide which work is worth their attention and which is not. Last but not least, the evaluation of a critic is also helpful to an artist, for the artist will know where his or her weakness and strengths are and will try to do better next time. A qualified critic is the person who connects people with artists by helping to get the artists’ ideas across and trying to convey general opinion to artists, which are crucial for the lasting value of artistic works to be created and discovered.

Admittedly, it is always not easy for critics to correctly judge the true value of all the works of art, for their evaluation is sometimes subjective and emotional. For example, William Shakespeare’s plays were regarded as distasteful by some critics but turned out to be great success at last. Vincent van Gogh’s paintings couldn’t be accepted by critics of his time but proved to be priceless nowadays. We can see that a critic’s evaluation can be misleading. Thus, people should not always follow what critics have said, but use their evaluation as a kind of reference to judge the value of works of art.

To sum up, although the evaluation of critics has its disadvantages, its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. It’s unfair to simply claim that only artists provide society with the lasting value of art. Critics also contribute a lot to society and their contribution is as important as that of the artists. All things considered, we can draw a conclusion that both the artist and the critic give society something of lasting value. (541 words)

来回拍啦~ :)

When talking about great artists, people all agree that Da Vinci, Mozart, Shakespeare are household names, but how many of us can name some famous critics in history? Only few people who have specialized knowledge knows[[[没s]]] those critics. Thus, many people tend to believe that it is the artist, not the critic, who provides the society with lasting value of art. Actually[[[是不是应该在前面加个but?]]], critics also contribute a lot to the world of art, which should never be ignored.

这段不错

However, when we give those artists credit, we should not ignore the contribution of critics at the same time, without which[[[whom?]]] the lasting value of art would be hard to discover and understand. First, critics, who have specialized knowledge about a certain kind of art, can offer professional and insightful evaluation of artistic works. Judging from critics’ evaluation, people can decide which work is worth their attention and which is not. Last but not least, the evaluation of a critic is also helpful to an artist, for the artist will know where[[[What?]]] his or her weakness and strengths are and will try to do better next time. A qualified critic is the person who connects people with artists by helping to get the artists’ ideas across and trying to convey general opinion to artists, which are crucial for the lasting value of artistic works to be created and discovered.[[[最后这个从句把动词调到前面是不是更恰当一些呢?]]] 这段要是有点例子来支持就更好了

Admittedly, it is always not easy for critics to correctly judge the true value of all the works of art, for their evaluation is[[[这里用复数好像更合适]]] sometimes subjective and emotional. For example, William Shakespeare’s plays were regarded as distasteful by some critics but turned out to be [[[a]]] great success at last. Vincent van Gogh’s paintings couldn’t[[[could not]]] be accepted by critics of his time but [[[are?]]] proved to be priceless nowadays. We can see that a critic’s evaluation can be misleading. All things considered, we can draw a conclusion that both the artist and the critic give society something of lasting value. (541 words)
