TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

In today's society , some people argue that the great man should be decided by contemporaries , while others maintain that individuals like this can be decided only by those who live after them . Do the people in the same time can judge a man? In my opinion , the greatness of individuals must be decided by the descendant ***not the contemporaries.
In the first place , indeed , a lot of man can be decided to be a greatness one under some circumstance . For example , the criminal of the World- War Two , the Germany leader  Hitler , who is a sample of hero in German people's mind , by attaining his own ambition , he commend German soldier to fight so that he will be the emperor of the world , but people are unconsicious . After the War Hitler's criminal have been revealed in all Germany people's eyes .They regret  what they have done to the Eurpoeen , so Germany people helped at their most to others . From this example ,we can draw a conclusion that contemporaries may not be judged a man fairly because the narrow insight of that time , only history can judge a man .
In addition ,  society should have its hero at any time . Although people's standard of moral have been changed time by time ,  to establish a society , the greatness of individuals , like the leader or hero, is necessary and useful.
Leader or hero is the one who generated by the special time , without great man , others will puzzle and confused so that people will fight with each other.
Great man is a catalyst of the society's progress , and people is the main power.
In our country ,China ,we judge a person usually by history.As the most famous leader Chairman Mao , who is the foundator of PRC , has a lot of mistakes in the culture revolution .  As a old saying goes,"No man is a perfect one". People who live with the great man in the same time cannot decided the great man totally , just the one live after can be more likely to decide the great man .
In the sum , every society should have its own greatness of individual , whether the greatman is good or not , just the history can tell .


TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this argument , a notion that Professor Thomas should receive a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairpeoson is expressed. To support his argument , the arguer use evidence that her classes are among the lagrest at the university which demostrating her popularity ,moreover , the money she brougt in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years showing her teachering and research abilities.With a carefully analysis, a lot of fallies has been found in the argument.
Firstly,although her classes are among the the largest at the university , if her class ,is compulsory class so that student must choose.The point is useless to support that her popularity among students .
Secondly, as an evidence , the money she brought to the university in each of the last two years , but two-year is not a long time , we can not judge her reseach ability in such a short time because maybe next year she could not get money . Even admitted her ability , if he research grants is just exceeded her salary in case that if we raise her salary next year ,what we give to her will exceed the money she granted. Therefore , to our university ,it is a loss.
Last but no mean the least, it is granted that all her popularity in student and her teaching and reseach abilities is true . But promotion to Department Chairperson maybe unwise .As we know ,a good researcher is not a good leader sometimes ,if she isnot good at deeling with the Department Affair, this change may even degrade her teaching and research ability .
In sum, the arguer's viewpoint is not based on sound reasoning. To support the argument,the arguer must give us more information of her teaching and research ability.And  provide evidence to show that she has ability to be Department Chairperson.

ARGUMENT没练过, 看一下ISSUE吧.

Do the people in the same time can judge a man? In my opinion , the greatness of individuals must be decided by the descendant ***not the contemporaries.
