36 "The greatness of individuals can be decedied only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries." [05/58; 06/6]

Syllabus:
1, view: I agree the issue.
2, agree: their contemporaries’ disadvantage: A: cover (the limitation of knowledge and thought); B: push out; C: development;  e.g.: Einstein; Darwin
3, agree: those who live after individuals: A: higher; B: all-sided; C: objective;
4, conclusion:

Exercise:
From ancient times to the present, there is a controversial issue about who decide the greatness of individuals. Depending on personal experiences, beliefs, and emotional concern, we may find that some people hold the opinion that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by their contemporaries but not by those who live after them, while others have an opposite attitude. As far as I am concerned, I entirely agree that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by the latter people but not their contemporaries. My view will be substantiated by following discussion.

In the first place, it is very difficult to objectively evaluate the greatness of the contemporary individuals because of the limitation in many aspects. For one thing, relating to individual's profit such as fame and fortune, it is difficult to calmly evaluate other things and people. It is entirely possible that somebody detract from the achievements of other people in the same field since they are afraid of the lost in fame or fortune. For another, due to the limitation of knowledge and thought, people fail to evaluate their contemporaries' greatness. Take Gregor Mendel who laid the foundation of modern genetics for example. His "Experiments in Plant Hybridization" describe the laws of heredity, but his work was so brilliant and unprecedented at the time it appeared that the true significance of his discoveries remains unrecognized by contemporary scientists and it took thirty-four years for the rest of the scientific community to catch up to it. Therefore, the achievement of individuals can not be decided only by their contemporaries.

In the second place, only those who live later can evaluate and decide the greatness of individuals. First of all, the latter people can evaluate the achievement of the former individuals more objectively because the evaluations are less relating to their own profits. What is more, those who live later can fully evaluate the individuals' greatness. Generally speaking, the latter people put things into their right perspective and decide the greatness of individual in its entirety, ie as a whole, not in parts only. Take Bill Clinton as an instance. When the public found the scandal between US former president Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, the contemporaries forgot the entire eight years contribution of his administration, which actually should not be effaced at any time. Finally, with the development of technology and society, people can successfully identify good and bad, success and failure and so on. Take Halley whose name was labeled as a comet for another example. After several year's careful observation and thorough calculation, Halley predicted that the comet appeared in 1682 was periodic and it would return after 76 years in 1758. Of course, it is impossible to prove whether the theory is right or not. After Halley passed away fifteen years ago, his prediction was confirmed at last.

To sum up, given the reasons discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live later, but not their contemporaries.

//507字。一个多小时。
补充:
原本要在第三段和第四段之间再写一段辩证论述的内容。时间不够,就干脆改了主题句。可能有点不伦不类。:)
举例还是大问题。例子都是从以前的文章里面迁移过来的。

To sum up, given the reasons discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live later, but not their contemporaries.

词汇和句式都比较单一,稍微丰富一点就很好了
