TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
WORDS: 580 TIME: 45min DATE: 2006-7-13
Camparing nonmainstream areas with mainstream science, in my eyes, I concede that sometimes people prefer resolving problems with nonmainstream knowledge. However, I strongly disgree with the speaker's evaluation which highly emphasize the benefits from nonmainstream knowledge and even make it play a vital role in human society.
Firstly, I would like to explain why human are depending on which they need nonmainstream fields, such as astrology, fortune-telling, psychic or other paranormal scales to satisfy their requirements for the problems. No matter what knowledge is included in mainstream or nonmainstrain, it acturally plays a vital role in its own area. Consider, for example, fortune-telling, the area of making an illusion toward future life, is acturally to satisfy human who are contious about future containing their descendants' life, the future technology, or even whether human can fly to outworld on Mars or like other univeral lands. In short, human are paying most attention to anything which is unknown and therefore cannot be understood by modern people and the mainstream knowledge. People do know where they have come to the Earth and why their purpose is Earth. Although the theory of evolution, written by Darwin, has changed people's mind to this question, after all it is indeed a theory which cannot be expalined by an exact experiment like the fields of science, or other mainstream areas. Considering this question, people are far more preferring the knoledge of nonmainstream to satisfy their craving for unknown world.
In addition, the use of nonmainstream knowledge is more often than not a addition for the mainstream. From old time to now, human-beings are accustomed to own the hope to explain everthing which they cannot obtain the totally answer. Because of this habit, when people encountered some problems like the question that where is UFO from, where did human come from, what the picture about future life. All these above questions have always stayed with person and the development of mainstream science. People like exploring the unknown areas and hate presenting their ignorance, and people have to rely on the nonmainstream areas due to this cause. In the field of astrology, it answers the question about the origiin of human-beings; the fortune-telling makes people to diminish their worry about their descendants or to save time to enjoy mostly their life now considering with the advent of disaster of Earth; the field of psychic can make people understand the unknown area about the brains which has not been exactly explained by medical science.
In fact, the nonmainstream areas are always accompanying with mainstream science. When people comes to this world, they cannot understand the whole world, and therefore they believe they belong to the few proportion of human and inhabitants. Yet, after the development of mainstream science, such as physics, people can know the Earth is round and they can manufacture a boat from the West to East or from South to North. The question contained in human mind has been resolved and people entered into a new nonmainstream area, for example, the question about the world of further universe. In retrospect with old times, the nonmainstream are is always followed with the progress of mainstream science.
In conclusion, the scarce of knowledge about the world or other untouched one has requested human to take advantage of nonmainstream knowledge, withouth it they cannot satisfy their greed for the totally knoledge owned by them. Not only can the mainstream science satisfy people needs, but the nonmainstream knowledge can do either.
