TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

The speaker raise the claim that the greatness of individuals can only be recognized by the people living after them and their contemporaries are not capable to evaluate them. I fundamentally agree with the claim because the great figures' ideas and insights are mostly beyond the intellect of people in their times and sometimes their theories require a long time to be testified. But all people are free to express their opinions towards individuals of their times for they are more closely relevant to them.

In the first place, great minds of the time are characterized by the advanced ideas or intelligences that surpass ordinary cognitions of the general public. Therefore, hardly can the public in the same time fully understand the greatness and impact of their spirits. It even takes times for later generations to percept the outstanding thoughts of the sages, let alone the contemporary people. When Judith Murray, one of American's earliest champions of female equality, fought for equal rights of women for education, economic independence and political engagement, people are totally at lost the necessity and impact of her actions. Even women in that time mistook her as seeking for personal fame. Only after decades did people realize the contribution of her to the development of human society. we can find a lot more figures, once cursed by their peers, fully appreciated only after their death, which best illustrate the case.

Furthermore, advanced scientific theories and hypotheses, for large part, can not be validated until some novel technologies come out. Scientific kingdom and public would not readily accept any theory unless visible evidence is available. Unfortunately, when a novel theory or hypotheses comes out, there are often little technology to validate and testify them. The allegation that the center of the cosmic is the sun, claimed by Copernicus from countless observed record which can hardly be read by others, was proved centuries later when advanced telescopes caught the motion of the heaven spheres, and have been revised again by the latest theory. In another perspective, those great scientists are prominent mostly for they are capable of seize the glint of light and see through the surface to reach the essence and the law of nature.

However, we are not to forbid contemporary public to deliver their views to great figures, because everyone in the democratic society has the right and authority to judge and evaluate the great figures of their times. For one thing, the reactions of the public to the ideas or actions of great individuals, especially in political area, serves as necessary feedback and important guidelines to the figures beause it is the public of the time who is undertaking the effect and has the authority, to be sure, to express their comments. For another thing, freedom to give voice to social events is opportunity for ordinary people to show their unique talents and capabilities. It is entirely possible that they would turn out to be great minds several years later.

In conclusion, the greatness and impact of individuals to the society, in most cases, can only fairly and fully appreciated from historical perspectives due to the outstanding talents and transcendental intelligences of the figures. On the other hand, the contemporary people have rights and obligation to show their perspectives towards the great individuals of their times.
