The Savannah College of Art and Design is one of the few institutions in the country to offer higher-level degrees specifically in architectural history. The graduate curriculum involves intensive study of the history and theory of architecture. M.F.A. candidates supplement their academic study with studio classes; professional internships with heritage organizations or museums give additional prespective. Among the resources in the college's collection is a complete set of the Historic American Building Survey on microfilm. The architecturally rich setting of Savannah's National Landmark Historic District is an important resource for the department.

The architecturally rich setting of Savannah's Historic District is an ideal living laboratory for students. Founded in 1733, tge cutt us based on one of the most admired urban plans in the world. Because students experience the architecture and city plan directly, they develop an intuitive understanding of urban interrelationships. Architecture students and faculty recently completed a design/build project on the college campus, creating the Pei Ling Chan Garden for the Arts that includes an outdoor amphitheater. Students worked closely with the porject fromt eh design stage through construction and completion.

The Department of Architecture offers two professional degrees at the master's level: M. Arch. - 2 year program for students with a pre-professional undergraduate degree in architecture and M. Arch. - 3 1/2 year program for students with an undergraduate degree in another field. A 1 1/2 year program is available for students who seek a second professional degree. Each degree requires the completion of a thesis which explores and tests architectural ideas of specific interest to the individual student.
