TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 491
提纲:
有的学科需要教员作学术外工作;
但有的基础学科如数学,作学术外工作浪费时间;
即使需要学术外工作的学科也要掌握好课内和课外时间,不能过多用于课外。
正文:
When it comes to the education problems, many educators and students consider that it is one of the best ways to put theory into practice, thus requiring faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. I concede that working outside the academic world sometimes benefits the teaching a lot. Yet, in my view, whether it is good for the courses or not is mainly determined on what the course is and how much time the teachers spend inside and outside the academic world.
Working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses the professors teach is indeed necessary to certain kinds of courses such as computer science, mechanic engineering, material science and so forth. It benefit professors a lot who teach such kinds of courses, at the same time, to be active in industrial, social and academic world. As a result, professors can be aware of the different directions of the industrial, social and academic world, thus adjusting the research and courses they teach in time to the industrial and social advancement. Consequently, when their students graduate from school and step into society, they will find themselves easy to put theory into practices, get acquainted with the up to date knowledge, and keep pace with the social advancement better. Therefore, spending time doing some work outside the academic world is of great help and even indispensable to some courses.
However, doing work outside the academic world, to other courses, is of little help and even a waste of time, for example, mathematics. Because such professors and scientist as those who study fundamental theories need more time to work in front of their desks and computers to develop their immature theories, while let them to do some work relating to practical job is to waste their time because few practical jobs can take advantage of an immature theory and thus such practical work contributes little to the advancement of the theory. Obviously, what such a professor should do first is to advance the theory. Accordingly, if such professors are required to do work outside the academic world, the quality of instruction will be badly impacted.
What is more, even those professors who teach courses that need to work outside academic world, they must spend more time working in the researching and teaching jobs rather than outside academic ones, because the main task of a professor is undoubtedly to do research and to teach students. Since the time and energy belonging to a person is limited, once a professor spend more energy on outside academic world, he will surly reduce time on his main task, therefore inevitably decreasing the quality of the researching and teaching jobs.
In sum, whether faculty should do outside academic work or not depends on the necessarity for the course or not. In addition, the faculty should balance their time and energy between their main tasks and others.
