题目:ISSUE 160 - "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
字数: 524                   日期:2006-7-24

The speaker asserts that an effective leader should stick to certain principles and objectives rather than easily be influenced by the public opinion. As far as I am concerned, paying attention to the public voices are essential to be an effective leader, which is equally important to the ability of holding certain principles and objectives.

There is no denying that without principles and objectives, the leader will not succeed in his career. Take Seward, a Secretary of America for example. In 1860s, he insisted on purchasing Alaska, an savage island, from Russia for $7 million, which was doubted by the public. However, Seward continued to implement his objective and at last he was proved to be true. Since the descovery of gold and affluent petroleum in Alaska was the most powerful evidence to change the public’s attitude towards Seward. Consider another paragon Martin Luther King, a social—spritual leader, he was engaged in his great objective to gain the civil right for blacks in America. Those leaders regard the unchanged principles and objectives as their lifelong pursuit which gain them public esteems and supports. In a word, possessing certain princilpes and objectives consistently are essential for the leader to be successful.

Overlooking the opinions of the public will make the leader lose public support and respect and eventually forfeit the leadership. History informs us that a leader would go to the extreme if he pay no attention to the public's opinions. Hitler serves as a good example. In order to serve his own desire, he wielded his power unprincipled and never considered the public feelings. Ulitimately, he not only cheated the public but also deceived himself and paid tremendous prices. Another less egregious paragon is Mao, who implemented his own favorable policies that encouraged family to foster more childern, turning blind eyes to the family planning put forward by Chen, who pointed out that the large population would lead to starvation of Chinese people. As a result, the fact demonstrates that the large population brings about more and more problems for China in the last decades. If Mao adopted the family planning policy that time, we chinese people would have avoided many problems such as starvation and unemployment. Consequently, ignoring the public feelings and opinion will bring the leaders to be bogged down into failure.

However, it is easiy for leaders to make false decisions if they adopt all the public opinions without think them over clearly. In fact, this is an embodiment of holding unfirm positions.  Only those leaders who accept the reasonable opinions can be successful in dealing with doubtful affairs. Thus, to be an effective leader, it is necessary to attentively assess the myrid of opinions at first and then they should consider whether it serves to the interests of the public to adopt the opinion.

In summary, we esteem and support those leaders who not only stick to their own position but also pay attention to the public opinions. Those leaders who fails to listen to the public voices are doomed to forfeit their leadership and those who blindly follow every opinion from outside would make false decisions as well.

The speaker asserts that an effective leader should stick to certain principles and objectives rather than easily be influenced by the public opinion. As far as I am concerned, paying attention to the public voices are[        is] essential to be[being] an effective leader, which is equally important to the ability of holding certain principles and objectives.

There is no denying that without principles and objectives, the leader will not succeed in his career. Take Seward, a Secretary of America for example. In 1860s, he insisted on purchasing Alaska, an savage island[该地区不是岛,但这种错误估计不影响分数,是常识性的错误], from Russia for $7 million, which was doubted by the public. However, Seward continued to implement his objective and at last he was proved to be true. Since the discovery of gold and affluent petroleum in Alaska was the most powerful evidence to change the public’s attitude towards Seward. Consider another paragon Martin Luther King, a social—spiritual leader, he was engaged in his great objective to gain the civil right for blacks in America. Those leaders regard the unchanged principles and objectives as their lifelong pursuit which gain them public esteems and supports. In a word, possessing certain princilpes and objectives consistently are[is] essential for the leader to be successful.  [例子应该继续论证为什么坚持原则和目标是essential,而不是仅仅列举两个成功的例子。]

Ultimately, he not only cheated the public but also deceived himself and paid tremendous prices. Another less egregious paragon is Mao, who implemented his own favorable[这种政策并不是有利的啊] policies that encouraged family to foster[foster意思类似于adopt是抚养,改have或者raise] more children, turning blind eyes to the family planning put forward by Chen, who pointed out that the large population would lead to starvation of Chinese people. As a result, the fact demonstrates that the large population brings about more and more problems for China in the last decades. If Mao adopted the family planning policy that time, we chinese people would have avoided many problems such as starvation and unemployment. [Mao这个例子很恰当,很好。但是这个假设情况的分析,我的建议是对人口过多的后果的分析再专业一点,其实starvation和unemployment说的已经不错了,还可以有比如居住,教育,福利各种问题什么的。] Consequently, ignoring the public feelings and opinion[opinions] will bring the leaders to be bogged down into failure.

However, it is easy for leaders to make false decisions if they adopt all the public opinions without think[改动名词thinking] them over clearly. In fact, this is an embodiment of holding unfirm[firm反义词,shaky, changeable, shifting] positions.  Only those leaders who accept the reasonable opinions can be successful in dealing with doubtful affairs. Thus, to be an effective leader, it is necessary to attentively assess the myriad of opinions at first and then they should consider whether it serves to[to去掉] the interests of the public to adopt the opinion.

In summary, we esteem and support those leaders who not only stick to their own position but also pay attention to the public opinions. Those leaders who fails to listen to the public voices are doomed to forfeit their leadership and those who blindly follow every opinion from outside would make false decisions as well[as well去掉,因为前面是forfeit leadership,没有也的意思].
