What's the essential trait of an effective leader or a public official? The speaker prefers the highest ethical and moral standards. However, speaker should have taken more situations into account, for a satisfactory answer relies on a case-by-case study.
Undoubtedly, maintaining excellent ethical and moral standards can ensure him or her to be in favor of. A leader is someone who organizes a certain pool of people to approach a final goal, thus, on the premise, he should have an effective attribute to gain support from his or her subordinates. Such kind of support can flow from one's traits. For example, being a great political and religious figure in India history, Gandhi is the very kind of great leader with high ethical and moral norms, who influences others through his example and thinking as an inspiration.
On the other hand, no matter whether or not the leaders have achieved these standards, sometimes, people trust them as long as their public figures arrive at the level. Take President Reagan for example. As a motion-picture star and a television host, Reagan successfully established a patriotic and traditional figure via television in that won the presidency, who, however, was not a perfect individual involving in Iran-Contra Scandal later. Thus, in this viewpoint, an effective leader is not necessary to be equipped with the paramount ethical and moral norms.
Also, in my opinion, no one can maintain the so-called highest ethical and moral standards. Several questions lies here, such as who identify the highest norms, can it be applied to throughout the world. It seems that people know what behavior conforms to a ethical and moral standard when they see it, but they cannot describe it in detail. What's more, certainly, different culture preserves different moral standards. For instance, Arab cultural standards seems funny for a man from northeastern of China, and an individual with eastern standards usually fails to operate a North American company. That is to say, even if a person desires topmost criterions, he is not able to find them. Therefore, it is not in the cards to pursue them.
Moreover, without high moral standards, some other factors also determine an effective leader, such as intelligence, physical stamina, self-confidence and so forth. Hitler, known as a fiend but an effective leader, is a person who lacks fundemantal moral standards. What’ more, when comes to different context, the central and crucial factor usually changes. Mao Zedong achieved his success through the action-oriented judgment and capacity to motivate people; Deng Xiaoping gained fame for his flexibility and assertiveness. The leader in an emergency room needs distinct qualities compared with president of a student union. As a consequence, it is really hard to say that highest ethical and moral standards are the only attribute which guarantees an effective leader.
In modern society, people can well justify who is an effective leader. Admittedly, maintaining paramount ethical and moral criterions makes such a person. However, it is hard to identify, recognize and gain such capacities, and we cannot evaluate a leader only by this. |
