147.The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."


The author recommend that the seals of Whirlwind company would increase dramatically, according to a survey which claimed that video game players prefer games with lifelike graphics which require the most up-to-date computers, and the advertising to 10 to years old people about its such kind of video games. It appears logical, but with further considering, I would raise my suspicions.

To begin with, the author's deduction rests on a survey without any details about the total amount of respondents, and the percentage of people who express that they like the games with lifelike graphics, is doubtable and unreliable.. Lacking of those essential details, it is entirely possible that those people are a small amount in the whole respondents, thus that kind of games is not as popular as the author's expectation that would bring the large increasing of video games sales. Moreover the provider of the survey is unclear, and is possible that the survey taker is unreliable with deliberately cheating which is intended to please the Whirlwind company for a better survey price. With this questionable survey, the author can hardly deduce an accurate conclusion.

Even if the survey is reliable, how many people can really afford the lifelike graphics video games is still doubted. As the author assert, this type of games need such a high level hardware support that one must use a up-to-date computer to run that. Would it be the bottleneck of game sales? It is possible that only the people, who are rich enough to upgrade their computer with the improvement of software requirement, are able to purchase these kinds of games, while it is just a luxury for those who love video games but without enough financial ability. The high threshold might exclude most lovers of lifelike graphic games from the line of customers.

Furthermore, the efficiency and the echo of the advertising work are not mentioned. Nowadays, we are surrounded by such mass amount of diverse advertisements that any unsuccessful one would be immerged in the sea of bombardments of advertisements, without any effect. It is possible that the ads of whirlwind is not attractive enough to grasp the attention of potential buyers, thus people would turn to buy its opponents' products for they make more effort at advertising and enable the customer to anticipate their games. In addition, the advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, and it is the group of people who claim that they like lifelike graphic video games and also who have high rank computer to play the game? If not, the extensive advertising would be out of target and be waste of money.

In sum, the argument is unpersuasive, and the author could not convince me that the sales of Whirlwind games are likely to increase dramatically, unless a more detailed survey is provided, with reliable provider and the percentage of people who like these video games. The author must also make clear how many people could afford the up-to-date hardware and the efficiency of the advertising.
