Outline
1 必须承认名人所起的重要作用
2 政治上,没有大部分人的努力无法实现社会的进步
3 研究、艺术领域,普通人也发挥了重要作用
It is quite natural that when we study history, our attention are always attracted by the famous few who play an essential role in accelerating the pace of history. Yet should we place too emphasis on them while neglect the groups of people behind them? In my opinion, though different roles they perform, both of them creat the history and their value should be acknowledged by the masses.
First, we have to admit that the famous few do play a significant role in history. Our history is replete with such examples. For instance, Roosevelt, the only president elected for 4th terms in American history, is famous for his "New Deal". Under his sagacious leadership, American economy was successfully lifted out of the doldrums during the 1940s. His "New Deal" also laid a foundation of the rapid development of America. We could not imagine what the aftermath would be if there is no such a man. At least, it would take a longer time to achieve the success. In other words, without a leader who has extrordinary abilties, it is unlikely for ordinary people to be organized to succeed in doing anything. Therefore, due to the great contribution of the celebrities, it is necessary to place enough emphasis on them.
Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that we could ignore the contribution made by groups of people, whether in academia, artistic or political field. In the realm of politics, no one can deny that the public exert tremendous effects on the development of our society. On the one hand, it is the numerous people who consist of the main force that changes the social regime or conquers adversary. From the slavery to the feudality, then to the social democracy, every huge step of social progress is necessarily involved with the power of the masses. A case in point is the French Revolution, which is launched by the commons and should entirely be attributed to the public. On the other hand, the most significant events and trends in history were to meet the increasing needs of groups of people rather than those famous few. The industrial innovation serves as a good example. In this sense, it is the ordinary people who determine the evolutive trend of the society. Hereby, there is no doubt that groups of people whose identitied have long been forgotten play a considerably important role in political area.
Inevitably, some people may argue that in the realms of academia and art, it is the instead of the masses. Howbeit, it is actually not the case. Newton had said, If I have see father than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants. It is quite reasonable. As scientific research is a continued process, it may need the efforts of many people even several generations, while ultimately only a few of them are remembered and regarded as giants. Similarly, in the realm of art, the birth of a masterpiece may result from momentary inspiration, which is usually obtained from certain unknown persons. For instance, “Moonlight” Sonata, one of the magnum opuses of Beethoven, was created under the illumination of a blind girl who played the piano in a cabin which was strewed with moonlight. Hence, the ordinary people also make contribution to the progress of science and the growth of art.
In conclusion, to understand history more completely,we should study not only celebrities but also the groups of people and strike a balance in how to allocate our attention between inividuals' and groups' contribution.
