Is the beginner more likely than the expert to make important discoveries in their fields as the speaker claims? Albeit I agree that sometimes new comers have chances to make discoveries because they could more easily get rid of the traditional thinking which may restrain one's mind from creative ideas. However, the statement fails to account for that in most of the realms, discoveries of great importance needs a lot of basic knowledge which many of the new comers don't have.
In some cases, I concede that new comers who have more creative thinking and less restriction, which may confuse the people who are always studying in this field, would possibly make great discoveries. Common sense tells us that when a person is studying one thing or working in the same place for many years, he would form a fix mind of the way to do his job. When a hint of new things, maybe a great discovery, come into his sight, he may neglect it or just study it in the way he is familiar with instead of finding a new method which is more suitable for the new things. However, if the person is a new comer to the field or the job, he may find a way fit for the new hint, because he hasn't an old way which may lead to miss the discovery.
However, discoveries for the new comers sometimes depend on their good luck, because, without accumulating knowledge about the certain realm, they are hardly able to find a suitable way to seize the hint of an important discovery. Despite they succeed, it is just because they are lucky to pick up the right way, but not because they are more knowledgeable than the people who have already worked in the realm for a long time.
What's more, scientific discoveries needs basic knowledge of its own realm, thus it is not easy for a new comer to make discoveries, unless he has made a good preparation for his new work. In many cases, a scientific research could last for many years, and it is also a process of learning as well as researching. It is what they gain from the procedure that leads them to the final success. If a new member come into the research group, he have to learn what the group has found already and then he has the ability to work with his workmates, or he could hardly do anything, let alone making important discoveries. In short, without the experience gained from work, a man is not easy to discovery any new things.
In sum, what the speaker says is not persuasive because no matter logical expression or common sense tells us that if a man wants to make important discoveries, he has to make great effort and spend a lot of energy and time on what he sticks to. Even a new comer succeed to discovery something important, it is not because of his knowledge but good luck. What we should do is to work steadily on our own job, and accumulate knowledge, and finally, we will succeed. |
