题目:ISSUE 36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.":):):):)

Can greatness of individuals only be [recognized] decided by later generations rather than their contemporaries, as the speaker maintains?  To some extent the speaker overlooks significance of contemporaries' decisions. On balance, however, I tend to agree with the speaker. By recounting various dimensions of the human experience, latter generation certainly could better assess greatness of individuals.:):):)

First, it is more objective to judge the greatness of individual by later generations than by contemporaries whose judgments are inevitably influenced by the [temporal] philosophy and values. Under the impact of masses, neither historian nor socialist can calmly assess the value of individual. Since some individuals prevalence in temporal society were protected by numbers of their advocates, [critics] and opponents have to face [immense] pressure. Especially nowadays, Public opinion is like a puppet, easily controlled by masses media. Most of popular singers and actors before, for instance, [achieved] greatness in their contemporaries’ mind. But how many of them are memorized by people at present; the answer is "few". It is true that only after unbridled enthusiasm becomes halcyon can we decided "what is greatness" and "which individual is great".

Secondly, Great individuals should be challenged by time, and only genuine one can always [withstand] this test. There are too many individuals, who acquired great fame and achieved their dedication, gradually with the years, begin to expose their weakness. Their greatness is temporary and will be [forgot] by people even not long after their death. Although there are many factors contribute to the definition of greatness, duration is the most powerful one.

Thirdly, greatness never stays constant. It is entirely possible that even after hundreds of years,  with the developing of the society, controversial person, who was criticized and overlooked by masses before, comes to [attract]  people's attention. For example, Johann Sebastian Bach is [just] regarded an [skillful] organist and virtuoso by public in his days. Only after almost half a century when musicians began to enthuse over the past music, did they gradually recognized his work represents the culmination of baroque style. It proves that since many great individuals possess potential and [extraordinary] [wisdom], people need time to [comprehend] them well.

In sum, although some great individuals in various areas achieved recognition during their own time, others, especially in the realm of science, cannot be confirmed as such without the benefit of historical perspective. With these stands, I hope it has been shown that greatness should be assessed by the future.

再发一篇即兴习作

whether to stay alone or to stay with friends.  It is a controversial issues. one  the one hand, keeping alone gives us more private space. On the other hand, living with friends gives us more opportunities to share and enjoy the communal life. Depending on personal style, I tend to prefer staying with friends, with the reasons listed as follows.

The first and most significant reason is that friends ease our pain and give us joy. When we failed , friends encourage and convince that we can win again; when we succeed, we can share happiness with them; when we are in sorrow, and feel the sky has crumbled, our friends come to console us; when we are in joy, we can enjoy the unforgettable moment with our friends. Friends, our life-long partner, company  with us whenever we are happy or unhappy . It is [undoubted] (undoubtful) that our life becomes more blissful.

Furthermore, friends offer us spiritual as well as material support  for our career. They, specializing in different fields, always provide inspiration for our job from a different angle  of view. For instance, Vincent van Gogh produced a number of portraits of members of the Roulin family who had befriended him. [Likewise], without funds provided by Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx's research on communism would hardly be able to continue. Both example aptly illustrate the significance of friends and convince us that we can receive generous help by living with friends.

In addition, unlike infants who feel hungry and discomfort and are unaffected except by their own physical condition, as members of society, we  oblige to concern others sympathetically. Since there is few chance to contact with others when leading a single life, we can say nothing of helping others. Considering these obligation, we should positively live with others and strive to be meld with their living circumstance.

Admittedly, some people are customary in living alone. In their single life, they feel freer and possess more capacious private space.    When an outbreak of bubonic plague temporarily shut down University of Cambridge, Newton returned to Woolsthorpe, where he remained alone for nearly two years. During this time, he discovered the gravity, invited calculus, investigated the nature of the light. In some senses, [solitary] life brings us peaceful mind for thinking.

In sum, I hope it has been shown that living with friends is more beneficial, although  solitary life is preferable by  some people to some extent. With friends, our wisdom and joy doubles  while our pain and sorrow halves

再发一篇 rationalism vs. empirism

People can acquire knowledge from books and experience, which are both medium of human wisdom. On the one hand, books, which document systematic knowledge and discoveries of ancestors, ensure us to pass our spiritual legacy from generation to generation; on the other hand, experience, which is directly generalized from practical or experimental activities, is capable of providing us productive and efficient advisement. Taking account of each side, I concede that, even without prior thinking, experience can always help us solve the problems, However, knowledge from books containing all the wisdom of our predecessors is insofarmore more significant.

The essential purpose of utilizing experience is to prevent the same mistakes which were made by predecessors before, and to follow successful method of the former people in order to approach the final goal easily. It is this approach that is the source of empirism, which has been once [held] by English [philosopher] who affirm that all the knowledge is based on experience and denied the significance of the prior thought and potential explanation and causes. Although experience tells us how to deal with each things, we still hardly understand the relationship between them. Worse of all, if we encounter a situation which is never met before, experience undoubtedly becomes helpless.

Books, on the other hand, record more detailed and accurate information. These information mostly depends on not experience but already-built theory. Differing from [intuitive] experience, the knowledge from books maintains the deductive reasoning. Especially in science, although Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction by experiments, only by Maxswell's electromagnetic theory published in book can we fully [comprehend]=(understand) this phenomenon and the relationship between electricity and [magnet]. Similarly, Newton's work is based on the knowledge written in books and pressed by former scientists' rather than on their experience. All above demostrate that knowledge from the book is more important.

In sum, books, as well as experience, are medium to keep the torch of knowledge, which is precious heritage humankind, passing down by our descendents. However, in my opinion, the importance of knowledge from books is more superior than those from the experience, because the accuracy and credibility of books.
