127The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."
TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
In this argument, the vice president recommends that Climpson should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations so that to improve their employees' productivity. To justify it, the arguer provides the improvement and benefit Climpson will get. A careful examination of the argument reveals how groundless the conclusion is.
A threshold assumption upon which the arguer relies is that they can prevent employees from wasting time by implementing electronic monitoring. To support, the arguer points out it can reduce the number of work hour spent on personal or recreational activities, which is unwarranted. Prevent the employees from shopping or playing games during work hours is not equal to reducing the employees' recreational time. The employees may go out to do some shopping during work hours instead of shopping online. If so, the productivity will go down conversely, as it will waste more time. Moreover, the arguer fails to consider other factors will lead to time wasting.
Another unproven assumption that by installing software, they can foster a better work ethic also weakens the conclusion. There may be not a necessary relationship between the work ethic and less recreational activities. It is entire possible that an employee own good work ethic, though spending much time on playing games and shopping because he or she naturally has a high level of work ethic.
Furthermore, implementing the monitoring software may incur much complaints from the employees, as the employees feel their personal spaces have been intervened. They may become to sabotage in work. Thus, it could not only improve the productivity, but probably reduce the working efficient.
The arguer offers no assurance to the prediction that the profit will be increased after using the monitoring. The overall profit will be determined by manufacturing cost, labor's salary, management as well as productivity. Hence without taking into account other alternatives to profit improvement, it is presumptuous to make the conclusion.
In sum, the argument is fraught with flaws as discussed above. To make the argument more convincing the arguer should provide more information concerning employees' quality and consider the other possible factors which will effects the profit. |
