There exsists an element of truth, to some extent, in the statement that significant events and trends in history were made by groups of people. After all, the collective's power is much stronger than that of individual's. And we should remember the groups for their devotions. However, group work has its own flaws, and overestimation of the contribution of groups while ignoring those made by famous people should be avoided. Indeed, the most advances in society would attribute to those well-known individuals.

One of the reasons given to support the claim that groups of people contribute more in historic events is that individuals in groups could better share their ideas and have an envirionment of freely discussion, especially in scientific areas. Creative thought and concept would be inspired in this kind of envirionment and would contribute to speed the society along the path of advance to a social upheaval. For instance, biological technology develops rapidly in the roaring 21th century. The most weighted and difficult problem confronted by the scientists is that how to decipher the composition of the DNA. As we know that human's DNA is a chain composed by four kinds of bases which carries genetic information. It is hardly to imagine that how could one person to deal with such an onerous task which has uncountable statistics and interminable calculations. The only way to decode the DNA is to make world-wide scientists collaborate and form a academic researching league that slice the problem into pieces which could be coped with by the member of the league. Albeit the progress of the decoding would be tardy under the current technical condition, no other better alternativeness could be suitable for the research. Moreover, the names of these scientists would be memorial and honored that their contribution to human technical advance and civilization brilliance would never be erased by time, and their attainment and research findings would have far-reaching effects on human development in the future. Hence, the significance of group is conspicuous.

Although benefits of group in researches or other events are remarkable, we should also wary of its shortcomings. Clearly, share and disscusion of different ideas would be an advantage of group, yet such benefits would also serve as deficiency if not make good use. Experience informs me that share may sometime develop into similarity that ruin the creativity and imagination; also, disscussion would become dispute, even an irrational quarrel which would disturb the original intention of the research. Besides, the teamwork would be less efficient if communications between individuals in the group are blocked in that the latest findings of one individual could be applied to other studies, and if other individuals can not be apprised with this information, the research would be demured and the whole task might be ruined.

Thus, after recognized the disadvantages of groups work, the significance of individuals in history events and trends should not be neglected- especially in political area that politicians could make decisions which would influence the world to a huge extent. Numerous examples would bolster this claim: reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon who made the effort to improve relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. His policy mitigated the hostile attitude between Western and Eastern conturies that made the people from the both camps would better interpret each other. And Nixon was the first American president who visited China; with him friendship and economic exchanges with U.S.A. were brought about to China. Therefore, we can arrive at the conclusion that polititians would always be significant in history events and trends. Moreover, figures in various disciplines would similarly have their unique influences on the future generations. Painters, musicians, architectures, and other artists whose masterpieces have far-reaching impacts on human spiritual world for the reason that these works inspire our infinite potential intellect to creat brilliant human civilization. Without efforts of these ingenious individuals, we might live in an insipid world full of dullness and vapidness. Hence, emphasis on individuals is necessary in the study of history that not simply the groups but these persons had contributed greatly on the social advance.

In conclusion, emphasis on groups when studying history would be required in order to have a full perspective to recognize the significance of teamwork. Nevertheless, ignorance of the importance of individuals should be evaded in that the majority of great works and inspirations were the efforts of individuals who devoted their lives to achieve the eminent accomplishments. There should exist a balance between teamwork and individual's effort that when we retrospect the history we could find merits in both of them.
