OPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS:509         TIME: 12:45:00 AM          DATE: 21/08/2006

What the issue said " Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws." seems reasonable. There is no doubt that everyone should obey the just laws as a citizen in the society. As for the unjust laws, however, it appears to be right to fight against them. As we all know, if Martin Luther King did not resist the unjust laws, the black people may still not have the same right with others.

However, before we talk about the unjust laws, we should understand what is actually "unjust laws"? If we cannot have a clear idea about what is just or unjust, it is impossible to decide whether to obey or resist these laws. Unfortunately, since the judgments vary among different people with distinct backgrounds, such as morality, tradition and religions, there is no a universal standard to judge whether some laws are just or not. Take the foot binding in ancient China for example, when the Republic of China was established, the government made a new law which strictly forbid the cruel foot binding. However, many people disobey it since the tradition has existed for hundreds of years. The tradition and morality have admitted and got used to the foot binding, so in many people's opinion, forbidding the foot binding was an absolutely unjust law even if in our modern society, the foot binding is a kind of sick art. Therefore, it is quite difficult to find out what are just laws and unjust ones because of the tradition and culture people persist in. Then how could we decide if we need to disobey or resist unjust laws when we cannot figure out what is "unjust laws"?

In addition, even if we can confirm that some unjust laws exist in our society; to disobey or resist them may not be the only choice. Also, it is definitely not the best choice. In a democratic society, most laws represent the benefits of majority of the citizens. If some people find they become unjust as the time goes by, they can always propose the legislation modification with sound reasons. By collecting the ideas from the citizens, the governments can carry out the procedure smoothly and effectively so that the legislation can truly represent the common benefits of the whole society. On the contrary, any irrational or directly resisted behaviors just make things worse, which not only does not help to fight against the unjust laws, but also disturbs the stability of the society.

To sum up, since the concept and standard of "unjust laws" are quite uncertain and people are strictly limited by the time they belong to, it is extremely difficult to find out whether on earth a certain law is just or not, do not mention to disobey or resist it. To find out the answers, we need to rely on the governments and change them by the formal legislation procedure. Only in this way can we change the unjust laws fairly and effectively.

As we all know, if Martin Luther King did not resist the unjust laws, the black people may still not have the same right with others. (总觉得这种例子应该放在文章里面去说,不应该一开始就弄出来)

Therefore, it is quite difficult to find out what are just laws and unjust ones because of the tradition and culture people persist in. Then how could we decide if we need to disobey or resist unjust laws when we cannot figure out what is "unjust laws"? (好像裹脚这个东西一开始也不是一种法律,后来也没有法律严格禁止阿,不太清楚这个情况,个人观点)

In addition, even if we can confirm that some unjust laws exist in our society; to disobey or resist them may not be the only choice. Also, it is definitely not the best choice. In a democratic society, most laws represent the benefits of majority of the citizens. If some people find they become unjust as the time goes by, they can always propose the legislation(可以吗?还是的要经过一番程序的吧) modification with sound reasons.

对段落的驾驭能力很好啊,段落的逻辑很清楚,但是不知道是不是时间不够的现实文章呢?总觉得倒数第二段的后面一部分内容可以在进行展开。
