issue
144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting
value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, p
aintings, etc.
123. "It is possible to identify a person's politics within a very short time
of meeting him or her. Everything about people—their clothes, their friends,
the way they talk, what they eat—reflects their political beliefs."

argument:
51.51.The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients
from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been
proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first
group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doc
tor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout
their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker t
han typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr.
Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients bel
ieved they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not si
gnificantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle str
ain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."
Dr. Newlan

Issue:
127 "Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inc
linations, or the dictates of our passions."
87 "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to m
ake important discoveries."
Argument:
201 The citizens of Forsythe have adopted healthier lifestyles. Their respons
es to a recent survey show that in their eating habits they conform more close
ly to government nutritional recommendations than they did ten years ago. Furt
hermore, there has been a fourfold increase in sales of food products containi
ng kiran, a substance that a scientific study has shown reduces cholesterol. T
his trend is also evident in reduced sales of sulia, a food that few of the he
althiest citizens regularly eat.

issues:
topic1: 164. "Sometimes imagination is a more valuable asset than experience.
People who lack experience are free to imagine what is possible and thus can a
pproach a task without constraints of established habits and attitudes."
toppic2: 70. In any profession—business, politics, education, government—tho
se in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for
any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership.
arguments:
144 The following appeared in the editorial section of a health and fitness ma
gazine.
"In a study of the effects of exercise on longevity, medical researchers track
ed 500 middle-aged men over a 20-year period. The subjects represented a varie
ty of occupations in several different parts of the country and responded to a
n annual survey in which they were asked: How often and how strenuously do you
exercise? Of those who responded, the men who reported that they engaged in v
igorous outdoor exercise nearly every day lived longer than the men who report
ed that they exercised mildly only once or twice a week. Given the clear link
that this study establishes between longevity and exercise, doctors should not
recommend moderate exercise to their patients but should instead encourage vi
gorous outdoor exercise on a daily basis.
