Center for Power Electronics Systems(CPES)

Established in August 1998, the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) is one of the nation's relatively few National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers. Its vision is to provide the nation with the capabilities to become a world leader in power electronic.

CPES Overview
The Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) includes five universities and 80 industrial partners. Its mission is to provide leadership through global collaborative research and education for creating electric power processing systems of the highest value to society. The programmatic elements of CPES are categorized into three areas: 1) technology development and demonstration projects, 2) industrial collaboration and technology transfer, and 3) education and outreach.

CPES's research program adopts the "integrated power electronics modules (IPEM)" approach and includes three major areas: Fundamental Knowledge, Enabling Technology, and Engineered Systems. Fundamental Knowledge centers on development of advanced power semiconductors, integratable materials, high-density integration, thermal-mechanical integration, and control and sensor integration. The Enabling Technology is focused on the IPEM design and synthesis techniques
encompassing electro-magneto-thermal-mechanical integration. The Engineered Systems is designed to demonstrate the IPEM-based system
integration concept to a wide range of distributed power systems and applications.

The CPES industrial collaboration and technology transfer program is our means of embracing industry in carrying out the Center's mission. It encompasses four components: 1) the industrial partnership program, 2) research collaboration, 3) connectivity partnerships, and 4) technology transfer.

The Center's education and outreach programs consist of seven components: 1) curriculum development, integration, and distance access; 2) inter-campus collaboration and exchange; 3) undergraduate curriculum development and research experience; 4) student leadership; 5) pre-college outreach; 6) student recruitment; and 7) industry/academia outreach.

The lab is conducted by Prasad N. Enjeti.

Prasad N. Enjeti (M'85-SM’88-F'00) received his B.E. degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, in 1980, the M.Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1982, and Ph.D. degree from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in 1988, all in Electrical Engineering.
In 1988 he joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering Department at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. In 1994 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 1998 he became a full Professor. His current research interests are: advance converters for power supplies, motor drives; power quality issues, active power filter development; utility interface issues,  advancing switching power supply designs and solutions to complex power management issues in the context of analog mixed-signal applications; exploring alternative designs to meet the demands of high slew rate load currents at low output voltages; power conditioning systems for fuel cells, wind and solar energy systems; and design of high temperature power conversion systems with wide band-gap semiconductor devices. He holds four US patents and has licensed two new technologies to the industry so far. He was the recipient of the IEEE-IAS best paper awards in 2003, 1999, 1998, 1996 and 1993; second best IEEE-IAS transaction paper published in mid-year 1994 to mid-year 1995 and, IEEE-IAS Magazine Prize Article Award in the year 1996. In 2000 he was elected to Fellow grade by the IEEE Fellow Committee for "Contributions to solutions of utility interface problems in power electronic systems and harmonic mitigation." He is also the recipient of the select title "Class of 2001 Texas A&M University Faculty Fellow" Award for demonstrated achievement of excellence in research, scholarship and leadership in the field. In 2004 he was named Texas Instruments Professor in Engineering

He is the lead developer of the Fuel Cell Power Systems Laboratory and Power Quality Laboratory at Texas A&M University and is actively involved in many projects with industries while engaged in teaching, research and consulting in the area of power electronics, motor drives, power quality and clean power utility interface issues. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas

LAB GOAL
To perform research in the area of electric machinery and power electronics. It is our goal to explore new electric machines and motor drives topologies for various applications. These applications may vary from new motor drive topologies for computer hard disk to ship propulsion. This laboratory is equipped with various state of the art equipment and is growing.
