In my opinion, data mining is a crossing area which involves many fields. It
surely can produce many fruitable research, and it's also closely related with
industry, so called industry-driven.  

EE is much better than CS. Computer science is trapped in the current hardware
configuration, for example, wintel system. The breakthrough in IT will come
from hardware, ubiquitous computing requires redefining of hardware. -- I may
be wrong. I may perceive CS too narrowly. Designing PDA, is that EE or CS
field?

Hehe...
Data mining is a good area but crossover means it is mainly on the application
level. Be careful to find a right position between CS and other areas.
Otherwise you are a 二把刀。
Computer Sciecne >> software  
Many theory parts in CS can be done with pencil and paper. Furthermore many
requests for hardwares are coming form the computation requirment in computer
science. They cannot live without each other.  Remember CS is a much larger
concept than the programming tools you are using now.
