TOPIC: ISSUE5 - "A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
WORDS: 511          TIME: 1:02:13          DATE: 2006-11-27

With consideration of the juvenile education, I strongly agree the notion that a nation should require all its students to study the same curriculum until they enter college. Rather than allow schools in different parts to determine which academic course to offer, the conformity of basic courses before college can help the college choose the excellent and outstanding students.
Though there are many optional courses available which are different in various areas, the basic and compulsory subjects are almost same the entire nation now. As a matter of fact, if the nation allows schools to decide which academic courses to offer would make the whole country be bound of having problems of college entrance and over localization. If pupils and secondary students learn different courses in different places, it is difficult for colleges to differentiate and well evaluate students applying their colleges. To ensure they can choose the most suitable applicants, the colleges have to acquaint with every course in different areas, which indicates that the resources can be better allocated somewhere else.
Not only the staff would encounter this kind of problem, but the committees of the secondary and primary schools would also suffer from this, if the different courses are set in different locations. The committees have to provide different qualified teachers to teach their own local courses, that is to say, they must employ proper teachers only suitable to their courses, who are so rare to find.  They are limited in their locations to search the perfect employees. Thus, the issues of overlocalization are raised.
However, in some sense, what we expect from the education before college is how much students gain the ability of learning and interpersonal skills. What specific course they study are not so important as long as students obtain direction and learn how to think by their own and make choices independently. What teachers should care about is not just what students recite and read but what is cultivated in their learning ability and critical thinking by learning the curriculums. Therefore, it would be a waste of time and resources to set different courses in different areas before colleges.
Studying same curriculum would help students be better evaluated by committees in college and save the costs of setting different courses. For example, we even need to take the GRE and TOEFL if we want to get a doctor or graduate degree in the colleges, which is all the same for students all over the world. The scores would help us in the process of application as all the applicants take same exams and the committees can evaluate us easily in this aspect. Thus even in undergraduate study, we have some basic curriculums in common. How can we expect that the curriculums in different areas vary?
In sum, to gain better evaluate system and save resources, I strongly agree the notion that a nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer.

Rather than allow schools in different parts to determine which academic course to offer, the conformity of basic courses before college can help the college choose the excellent and outstanding students.
Though there are many optional courses available which are different in various areas, the basic and compulsory subjects are almost same the entire nation now. As a matter of fact, if the nation allows schools to decide which academic courses to offer would make the whole country be bound of having problems of college entrance and over localization(记得上次看你写的文章,也是有be bound to 的那个句子读起来不顺。Over localization,我不确定是否可以这样表达).

Thus, the issues of overlocalization are raised.(你的思路很清楚,讲了两个方面)
However, in some sense, what we expect from the education before college is how much students gain the ability (to learn and obtain interpersonal skills,感觉这样才能平衡)of learning and interpersonal skills. What specific course they study are not so important as long as students obtain direction(获得方向?) and learn how to think by their own and make choices independently. What teachers should care about is not just what students recite and read(既然背诵和阅读不重要,为什么我们的小学和中学有那么多考试?背诵和阅读是获取知识的手段呀。) but what is cultivated in their learning ability and critical thinking by learning the curriculums. Therefore, it would be a waste of time and resources to set different courses in different areas before colleges.
Studying same curriculum would help students be better evaluated by committees in college and save the costs of setting different courses. The scores would help us in the process of application as all the applicants take same exams and the committees can evaluate us easily in this aspect. Thus even in undergraduate study, we have some basic curriculums in common. How can we expect that the curriculums in different areas vary(这句话是什么作用?GRE是学业能力测验,而托福是语言能力测验,并没有统一教材和课程呀)?
In sum, to gain better evaluate system and save resources, I strongly agree the notion that a nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer.

整体感觉不错。尽管有些超时,还是能写这么多内容。很是羡慕。  我不能和你互改了。我吃不消这样的强度。真的抱歉。
