51. "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
There is a public controversy nowadays over the issue of whether education will never be effective enough unless it is accurately apt to the individual needs and interests of each student. I agree that teachers should take students' personal interests and their needs into consideration, insofar as students will be eager to learn what has been taught to them. However, it should not become a critical standard for judging the efficiency of an educational system; whereas, the effect of the educational system should be measured by its contribution to the contemporary society.
Admittedly, it is reasonable for teachers to think about students' interests and needs fully, and this teaching idea can even be originated far from the ancient Greek and China. It is well known that Socrates just brought up Plato by talking with him and leading him to study further on his mere interests. And the great Chinese sage Confucius also confirmed the importance of teaching students according to their aptitude. Throughout the history, it is commonplace that teachers instruct their students following their needs and interests more or less; so as in modern times. Now the governments in all the countries widely try hard to arouse the enthusiasm of their youngsters for studying by leading them to develop their own interests. From what I have discussed above, it is clear that let the education keep pace with what the students are interested should never be underestimated.
Conceding that paying great attention to students' needs and interests is a matter of great account in the process of education, I nevertheless disagree that it can be treated as the only standard to measure the effect of an educational system--for three reasons. First of all, as a society based on the application of knowledge, this modern society cries for a large amount of qualified laborers in varied fields who have grasped enough knowledge; as a result, the schools have to educate their students in a significantly rapid speed; or else, they will not meet the development of the society. From this perspective, it is unrealistic for the schools to cultivate the students in a traditional way, meanly, to teach them totally depending on their inclination, for apparently the schools are impossible to afford the substantive fee and the society will certainly be impatient for their low efficiency. On the contrary, it is some kind of standard educational mode that can fulfill the urgent requirement of this society, since it can produce enough competent persons.
In the second place, most of the working positions nowadays ask their applicants to hold certain knowledge and skills; thus, it is explicable that the school must offer some compulsory courses to the students, although some of the young men are just uninterested in it. For instance, if a student aims to be a pilot, but he is only keen on learning how to fly, but nothing else, such as how the airplane works and why it works in this way. It is incredible to imagine that he will be trusted as a qualified pilot if he holds only a part of the necessary knowledge. In a word, school should endure the duty to produce competent persons who can be enrolled into the work once they begin their career.
Furthermore, it is whether the educational system is capable to contribute adequate eligible graduates to meet the demands of the society that should become an important criterion to judge the effect of the educational system. It is common now that many students only learn what they want to attain; however, it will result in a serious consequence that, most of them will be unable to maintain a comprehensive knowledge structure. Thus, not only will the effect of the education be damaged, but these students may also have to face some huge obstacles when they begin to hunt for a job. In conclusion, it is convincing that if the education only meets the interests of the students, but overlooks the needs of the society, it will depart from its biggest duty.
To sum up, in order to arouse the enthusiasm of the students to obtain the necessary knowledge, the schools and the teachers should pay attention to the students' interests and needs when they are making the teaching plans. Nonetheless, what is more important, with an eye to the development of the society, is that the educational system must meet the demands of this society, or else it will never be evaluated as effective enough.
