ARGUMENT29 - When Ida McAllister ran for mayor of Lake City four years ago, she failed to win even 30 percent of the vote. But since then, McAllister has made public her commitment to environmental causes. She would be wise, therefore, to announce her intention to close all Lake City parks to automobile traffic, thus following the example of the former mayor of Plainsville, Alecia Yu . On the recommendation of a small group of concerned citizens, Mayor Yu prohibited automobile traffic in all Plainsville parks, and therefore was credited with solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of life in Plainsville. This action would have great appeal to the citizens of Lake City, most of whom participate in the community's recycling program, and would guarantee McAllister's success in her current quest to be Lake City's new mayor.

The author concludes that it will be wise for Ida McAllister to announce her intention to close all Lake City parks to automobile traffic, and this action will ensure McAllister 'success in her current quest to be Lake City' new major. To support his conclusion, the author cites a example that on the recommendation of a small group of citizens, the former major of Plainsville, A Y, prohibited automobile traffic in all parks, and was credited with solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of the life in Plainsille. In addition the author also cites the fact that most of the citizens of Lake City join in the community's recycling program. However, this argument suffers from several problems, which render it unconvincing.
First of all, whether the example concerning A Y'S action indicates that it solved the pollution problem and improved the quality of the life in Plainsille is open to doubt. In fact, only a small group of citizens recommended the former major to prohibited automobiles in all the parks. However, it is entirely possible that these citizens are not representative of entire citizens in Plainsille, and actually most of the citizens were not willing to prohibit automobiles in parks. Even assuming that the action was favored by most of the citizens in Plainsille, the author fails to convince that the prohibition was credited with solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of life in Plainsille. In the absence of information that condition of environmental and reflection of most of the citizens in Plainsille after the prohibition was conducted, the author cannot draw the conclusion that the prohibition on automobiles in all the parks solved the pollution problem and improved the quality of the life in Plainsille.
In addition, Even assuming that A Y'S action solved the pollution problem and improved the quality of the life in Plainsille, the author commits a false analogy. the author simply assumes that the city of Plainsille and the city of Lake City bear same conditions, but he does not provide any evidence that their all conditions are indeed comparable. Perhaps the number of parks in Lake City is far more than that in Plainsille, and therefore it will render many other problems in Lake City as the prohibition is conducted. Hence, even if the action proved effective in solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of the life in Plainsille, there is little guarantee that it will work just as well for Lake City.
Finally, the argument is based on a hasty generalization. Even assuming that the action also proved effective in solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of the life in Lake City, in addition, most the citizens of Lake City participate in community's recycling program ,it does not follow that McAllister will succeed in her current quest to be Lake City 'new major. As we know, the success of the major of a city demands several major factors other than environmental problem. For instance, citizens are generally concerned about the municipal facility, social security and criminal rate, all of which are overlooked by the author. Thus the unwarranted assumption that the environmental condition is the only factor affects the result of McAllister's current quest to be Lake City 'new major would most probably turn out to be ineffective and misleading.
To sum up, the author fails to establish the causal relationship between the example concerning the former major of Plainsville, A Y's prohibition on automobile traffic in all parks, the fact that most the citizens of Lake City participate in community's recycling program and McAllister 'success in her current quest to be Lake City 'new major. To make the conclusion convincing the author should have to provide evidence that the prohibition in Plainsille indeed solved the pollution problem and improved the quality of the life, and this action will also effective in Lake City. Moreover, to better evaluate the argument, we need more information that it is only environmental condition that affects the result of McAllister's current quest to be Lake City 'new major.
