题目:ISSUE 26 - "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."

1. 有些历史建筑不能满足当代需要,拆毁的话有一定好处
2 历史建筑有物质价值。(文物)
3 历史建筑有精神上价值,历史价值,美学价值
4 有别的手段平很历史建筑与现代需要的冲突
Should modern development be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served as the speaker claims? I concede that some certain historical buildings hinder the development of modern society and the satisfaction of the needs. However, the historical sites have their own values that in most instances, the potential harm of the activities that eliminate the historical buildings overweighs the contemporary benefits. And the specific pros and cons should be evaluated separately in different situations.

Admittedly, there are certain historical buildings could not fulfill the contemporary needs, and to raze the historical buildings for modern purposes could be, in some extent, beneficial. Since the downtown areas are usually the most prosperous zone of the entire region, and these areas are always the center of the cites in the past where historical buildings remain, Because of the dramatic increase of the density of population, and the widely used private automobile, the down town area needs more space to meet the requirement of traffic, the working place, and living place. Hence the buildings in downtown area are becoming increasingly high; meanwhile the roads and streets are expanding rapidly. Historical buildings might be either too old to satisfy the contemporary needs, or too tiny to hinder the utility of the space, in other words, these buildings cannot serve the modern developing. Considering the small portion that the city was totally built on nothing, the confliction between current needs and the old building are commonly occurred in many cities with a certain measure of history. In this case, the smash of old buildings for modern purpose will promote the economic development .Take the Chinese capital city for example, in the 1960s; the ancient rampart of Beijing was destructed because the rampart greatly impedes the extension of the city and the convenience of transportation as well. And consequently, Beijing City could expand its urban area to the suburban and greatly enhance the capacity of transportation both of which contributes to the .modernization of that city.

However, the historical buildings have certain material values. Some historical buildings should be treated as precious antiques. Take the Forbidden City for example, any one of its palaces is invaluable.  Unless damaged, the real antiques rarely lost its value, simply because the amount of antiques could only decrease rather than increase, and hence the market principles define the increment of the average values of antiques. You never know what a delicate historical building will worth after decades. The destruct of ancient building should take the risk of losing potential profits.

More important is the historical values and aesthetical values which both effect on our spiritual. In the first place, the historical buildings are the remainder of history. Historical buildings, such as the residences of the historical celebrities, the place witnessing significant historical issues, the buildings represent the glories of the past time, the holy ancient temples and likewise, have huge values in the study of history and also the social education. With the existence of the historical buildings, we know better about the past of the society and learned form it. With the existence of the historical buildings, we are inspired by the accomplishments of our ancestors and keep on struggling. With the existence of the historical buildings, we identify our roots and lend more devotion to the society. Meanwhile, at the societal level, the historical building is an effective proof to illustrate the hardship and prosperity of the nation in the past and therefore remind the society and all its members to be careful.  The historical is indispensable records of history and should not be easily discarded. In the second place, some historical buildings might have innumerable aesthetic values. Take in account the St Paul’s Cathedral in London; the whole building is a piece of art, every details in which reflect the elegance and beauty. And the architectures also reveal the intelligence design of ancient architect sand bring us enjoyments.

Moreover, we could have other balanced ways to serve both the preservation and development. Materials could be duplicated once and once and again. But some spiritual issues could not be retained once being lost. Such as we could not repair the nose of the Sphinx, if the historical buildings are destroyed, we lost them forever. To better preserve the historical buildings as well as meet the contemporary needs, we could find other effective means. For example, the reconstruction or modification of the historical buildings, which reserve the primary structure and appearance while add some advanced equipments or facility and strengthen the stability, could both preserve the profile of the building and also meet the modern needs. And it is necessary to consider different buildings in their own situations.

In conclusion, the historical buildings should be preserved rather than be razed down. And in different situation we should implement different solutions. The destruction of historical buildings should always be the last choice.

很没有状态,这篇是我逼着自己慢慢磨出来的。很惭愧,用了这么长时间还没有写好。
