TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 473          DATE: 2006-12-1

提纲:
A.      群众在历史中发挥的作用不可忽视
B.      个体在历史中的作用同样是巨大的
C.      历史是由个体和群众共同创造的
The speaker asserts that the study of history pays too much attention to the individuals and most important events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. I agree insofar as the assertion that groups of people who have been forgotten also contributed much to the significant events and trends. However, the assertion has some problems and therefore is indefensible. In my view, both the importance of the individuals and groups of people should be emphasized.

To begin with, the statement that groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten contributed much to most significant events is quite compelling. Every decision needs executants, so the capacity and efficiency lead to the final consequences. Here is an example that can support my reason. As we know, Great pyramid of Khufu, one of the biggest pyramids in the world, consumed more dressed stone blocks than any structures ever built. The number of those gigantic stones is estimated 2.3 million and the average weight of them is 2.5 tons. Facing to so grand engineering, without a myriad of people whose identities have already long been forgotten, the grandiose Khufu's pyramid can't be set up. Thus, those groups of people should not be forgotten, for their great contribution.

Beyond this concession, I disagree the assertion because it seems to recommend that the effect of individuals in significant and trends is not so vital. Consider Mahatma Gandhi, who has bestowed the title of Father of the Nation in India, for his great contribution to the independence of India. Owing to the influence and rallying point of Gandhi, the Hindu adhered to his principles of satyagraha and non-violence. It is most possibly that there was no one but Mahatma Gandhi possessed of such powerful influence to call on people to fight. So, the great importance of individuals should not be neglected.

Finally, it is unilateral to tell which is more vital between individuals and groups of people who have long been forgotten. Because history is created by populace, which contains individual and groups of people whose identities were forgotten. Although the efforts of Winston Churchill can never be undermined, the support and the sacrifices of the martyrs are vital to the victory of war. Only taking account of both the effect of individuals and groups of people, we can understand history clearly.

In sum, I concede that groups of people who have long been forgotten contributed much to the history. However, the speaker neglects the great importance of individuals. Both individuals and groups of people play significant roles in the stage of the history, and it's hard to tell which is more important. In the final analysis, in my opinion, only when individuals and groups of people work together, it comes to the history.

In my view, both the importance of the individuals and groups of people should be emphasized (in the study of history).

Facing to so grand engineering (project), without a myriad of people (,yet) whose identities have already long been forgotten, the grandiose Khufu's pyramid can't be set (built) up. Thus, those groups of people should not be forgotten, for their great contribution.

Beyond this concession, I disagree the assertion because it seems to recommend that the effect of individuals in significant and (?) trends is not so vital. Consider Mahatma Gandhi, who has (been) bestowed the title of Father of the Nation in India, for his great contribution to the independence of India. Owing to the influence and rallying point (用的好)of Gandhi, the Hindu adhered to his principles of satyagraha and non-violence. It is most possibly that there was no one but Mahatma Gandhi possessed of such powerful influence to call on people to fight. So, the great importance of individuals should not be neglected.
如果在TS中直接说individual的重要性会更好些。

Finally, it is unilateral to tell which is more vital between individuals and groups of people who have long been forgotten. Because history is created by populace (少见), which contains individual and groups of people whose identities were forgotten.

Both individuals and groups of people play significant roles in the stage of the history (each historical stage), and it's hard to tell which is more important. In the final analysis, in my opinion, only when individuals and groups of people work together, it comes to the history.

本文结构清晰,语言流畅,举例也很有代表性。
建议是在第四段中对例子进行展开说明,使其丰满起来,毕竟这是全文的重头戏。
