Does the society not place enough emphasis on the intellect as the speaker claims? I agree with the claim in that the intellectual abilities are treated as the crucial features both at the personal level and the societal level, whereas in our educational systems, including social education and school education, we sometime time neglect the reasoning and other cognitive skills.

To begin with, in some parts of the society such as academic research, the legislation and even the business, it is necessary to exploit intellect to solve problems and make progress. We are so focus on the creativity at present, and the creativity inherently demands intellect. Without intellect the free thinking will become irrelevant illusions. In academic field, the scientific research emphasis on the intellectual capacities. All the new discoveries or invented theories are rooted on logical reasoning, which cause the scientific works convincing and persuasive. In talk shows, when concerning about the most important features of a researcher, the despondences usually relate with creativity, or otherwise the intellect abilities. In legislative ranges, the cognitive thinking is the most important feature of law makers, simply because logical and reasonable thoughts lead to justice. The laws are divine and inviolable. In order to maintain the equality of the laws, both the legislators and lawyers should obtain the intellect not to abuse the power of law. Suppose the laws turn to be irrational and unreasonable, even though still hold the power of punishment, the laws could not retain their effectiveness. In addition, the business world currently also needs reasonable analysis to improve to understand the need of the market and the efficiency of the promoting activities, so that to heighten market share and improve production’s quality and popularity.

In addition, at the personal level, we have increasingly requirement on intellectual abilities by the society. We have machines to release our labor, hence the companies demand more and more intellect force rather than labor force. The fierce competitive job market needs not the man who could do manual jobs, but the man who could provide solutions, in other words. ability to reasonable thinking. Moreover, the individuals will actualize his values only when he could think logically and reasonable. To be actually independent individuals, we have to posses valuable and feasible ideas through building our own critical views and enhancing our logic ability.

However, in the one hand, our current school education style, to some extent, misleads the students by instilling too much knowledge while lacking the logical reasoning.  For example, we are always taught about the historical issues such as when and where those issues happened, and who lead them. Sometimes the textbooks tell us everything which the exams may include. In this case, we have little chance to think about the inner causes and the influence of issues with respect of their backgrounds and even other aspects more profoundly. In the existing education style, we only need to root the information and pass the tests. Even there are some logical thinking causes in some schools, the mainstream teaching method is to fill the students with knowledge, rather than help the students develop their own cognitive skills.

In the other hand, the social education media, such as the mass media, the public cultural places become less likely to provide intellectual instructions to the multitudes. The mass medias, television, magazines, newspaper and the like are more tend to offer entertainments rather than intellects. And the museums and theaters are more willing to achieve economical benefits. The entire society is more money oriented and few people could calm down and peacefully focus on the intellectual advancement. In a word, the society has no means and intentions to cultivate the logical thinking and reasoning among its citizens.

To sum up, the intellectual abilities is essential in today’s world, whereas the intellectual educations are not sufficient, which reflects our inadequate concentration on the intellect. Since the free thinking and social development requires intellect, the society should no longer neglect the education oriented to improvement of intellectual.
