Could a society better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation rather than a sense of competition as the speaker claims? In my view, competition is a crucial attribute of many successful figures at present as well as the past; meanwhile cooperation is also a major reason for successful leadership. It is the balance of competition and cooperation that lead to successful leadership.

To begin with, the sense of competition leads to self-advancement. Most people try to make progress but are confused by how to begin with. In other words, lack of inspiration. Though they may discontent about their contemporary situations, they don't know the way to make alternations. The competition could build a more specific goal which propels individuals to move ahead. The pressure of competition could cause certain extent of tense that in turn will lead to better use of the time or otherwise, effectiveness. When in favorable situations, a sense of competition make you alert with the potential threaten or aware the existing weakness, and keep on striving to make progress.  When in hardship, the gap between you and your competitors could make you realize the actual situation at present and inspire you to struggle.


In addition, the sense of competition brings fearless and confident to leaders. Faced with complicated situations or difficulties, the man with a sense of competition tends to be determined to overcome the difficulties rather than yield to them. The courage of those people is enhanced by the sense of competition since they deem the difficulties as competitors and therefore hardly surrender to them. And with the experience of competing with others or all sorts of hardness, they regularly become confident about themselves, and then, as a result, reinforce their competence.

However, merely possess the feature of competition could never come to successful leadship.  To the contrary, an extreme sense of competition may conflict harm to both individuals and the society.  In this case, competition could lead to fight, even hatred, which brings overweighing harmful. For example, because of unlimited competition of the limited natural resources, wars could have happen between nations. We could also watch from the television news that the election campaigns arouse conflictions among the advocators of different candidates. The curse and smear between competitive companies is not rare.  Meanwhile the sense of cooperation could bring about peaceful and harmonious surrounding for human beings. And ultimately, it is the cooperation rather than competition help us survive and prosperity. On the one hand, regardless the greatness of the leader, he has to be supported by others to achieve some great achievements. The strength of individual is limited, while the union of strength that makes us success. The current society would never be the single hero era when Zorro beat the evils only by himself. When it comes to the leadership, it inherently requires cooperation in that the leader has to direct the team, and make sure the team runs well. It is not only the performance of the leader but also the subordinates should be well inspired and instructed that contribute to the successful leadership. The leader has to make balance between the different opinions which needs a good apprehending of cooperation.


On the other hand, even to the opponents cooperation is a necessary mean to make mutual benefits. For example, many telecommunication companies join together to form a council which enact universal criterions of the technologies to accelerate the unification of the technologies therefore benefits the whole field of business. The trend of solving international affairs is to negotiate or intercede to find a acceptable solution rather than confliction. For leaders, on a higher level, competition is to compete with themselves, to confront fear, to defeat their defects, and to enhance tenacity. Meanwhile cooperation is more important when contact with others to improve the well being as a whole.


In sum, competition is necessary for many successful leaders as a crucial attribute, however, cooperation in my view is also a major reason of successful leadership. It is the combination of competition, and the cooperation that lead to successful leadership.
